Hi All -

Anyone got advice on doubling up on Hobie Outbacks / 32" wide fishing yaks on a single rack?

I have seen stackers, vertical bars, cradles, other things advertised.  I am looking for a reality check for how they work, easy to load, etc!

All advice duly appreciated!1

Double stacking is always scary especially with such big boats. Loading in side by side cradles or on the racks won't work as the racks are too narrow. Vertical bars work great with smaller boats (white water) never really liked them for big boats. If your racks are factory  two boats like the outback will most likely exceed your weight capacity. Best bet is to get wide crossbars then you can load direct to the bar or to a cradle.

I put one vertical and one upside down directly on my racks. Not optimal. My kayaks are warped a bit. Don't ask me how I know but you can stack a kayak vertically without the vertical support bars. I do not recommend without the vertical bars. Factory bars won't support the weight. I need to find a better solution. One roof rack busted. The other about to. So I actually run a strap inside my vehicle. Definitely not optimal.

Yah it's my car...ugh.

Two different size boats work slick on my Yakima bars.

Yeah - my bars rated to just over the hull weight of Hobie outback x 2.   Right near load limit but under.  Have to make sure there's no water in there or too many accessories.

I have 56" bars now.  Can do one vertical and one upside down flat.   Have to find a cradle or vertical bar that can secure the Hobie dimensions and weights!

Just saw your racks .... Uh ... Kardinal you do not pass the engineers inspection!  And the link was not a confidence builder either.   OK - I'll do better than that!

We put two outbacks on our Subaru outback factory roof rack using the Yakima vert bar.  The roof rack is barely rated for the weight,  and yeah... We made sure no water was in mine (it's a bit leaky). Just "spooned" the boats with the bar on the far left and the bottoms of the kayaks facing the bar.  Worked like a charm....but I prefer my truck...

Thanks.
Double checked my aftermarket rack.  I will be just inside the load limit with two bare Kayaks, mounts, etc.
I am now running one flat, and one on a J-cradle.   Will need to perhaps shift a bit more to one side from what is shown in the pics, but I think this will be doable for when we are both out.  Keeping the second close to the side for loading and to allow my 'flat' kayak to continue to load using the keel roller off the back of the truck will keep my solo-loading super easy.
