i have had the kayak out a few times and am almost ready to install a trolley system for it.  my question is should i use the trolley system from yak gear or just put one together from the hardware store? what do you all think?

Inspired by Palmetto Kayaks, I made my own that I'm mostly happy with.  It was a great DIY project with few challenges and good results.

A couple detailed opinions on that design: Getting completely to the bow is important for tracking at anchor. The Nite-Ize clips are really good for secure, yet detachable, mounting.  Depth control is set before dropping, so that takes some getting used to.

If you are mildly adept and can tie a bowline, I'd say go for it, if for no other reason than personal pride.  8)

For about $30 you can get the one made by Harmony and comes with everything you will need. Works great. I have 2 of them. One on My Trident and one on the Commander.

Buuuuut..... Yak-attack has just released a new one that they premiered at icast just this last week.
It is listed on their website (out of stock) but theres more on it on Facebook.

My anchor trolleys are a combination of the Hobie design and the Capt Dick Enterprises design.  They have a zig-zag cleat for locking off the anchor line, like the Capt Dick design.  You can use the same cleat to lock off your anchor line by zigging the anchor line when the trolley line zags.  They have a  length of shock cord like the Hobie design.  The shock cord makes it easier to lock the trolley line into the zig zag cleat.  I replaced the rings on the Hobie trolley line with small climbing carabiners, so I can just clip the anchor line into the trolley.
