Who's all going to be in Seward for the opening of the Silver salmon derby? I'm making plans now to take miller's water taxi out to Sunny Cove or to Caine's Head. If there's a better idea I'm all ears. I did this last year and caught 3. The silvers seemed further out last year than they are this year. This last weekend I caught 3 at Lowell Point. I need to win first place so I can send all the winnings ($10,000) on a new Hobie

I may try it towards the end of the derby.  I want to make a couple of silver trips.  I think I can use two dozen which is two days worth on a hot bite with a proxy.

When does the derby start?   I'm going to hit Seward the next few weekends and will be bringing my Zodiac along, we can use that to bring 2 kayaks at a time out to Caines Head.  I can do a few runs out there and just have the girlfriend fish out of the zodiac while we use kayaks. Just an idea.

Good idea AKFISHRIPPER. The derby starts on the 8th. I'm heading there on the 7th and plan to leave late on the 9th.

I can never talk mine better half into two weekend in a row. I was told to pick this weekend or next. Last weekend I had the best luck trolling a bright chrome flasher with a brined half herring 3ft behind it. Almost all of my takes was at 60ft. I tried mooching over passing bait balls but the stupid cod would jump on it right away.

Seems universal. I got the threat recently about "pick me or pick fishing."  Thankfully the answer was easy and I am once again unencumbered to fish as I please. LOL.  Seriously, If you aren't observant enough to know the extent fishing is a passion of mine, ya probably shouldn't date me in the first place. Haha.

I did see on another forum that the Whittier harbor had some silvers so I guess it's possible Whittier has a few fish right now. I've never had any luck there.

I totally agree with you on Whittier. The only place in Whittier I can catch eatable fish is by the white sand beached on Perry Island. The down side is the cost to get dropped off there. Some of my biggest fish have been pulled out of there and the camping is amazing. I would love to go there this summer but I would have to fine 5 other kayakers to split the bill with me.

Just fished Whittier this past weekend and was able to sabiki up a half bucket of herring in 15 minutes.  I caught 3 silvers in about 30 minutes right off decision point.

I have only fished Whittier twice and the goal was only to learn more about kayak fishing. Where is decision point?

The first point you come to is Trinity Point which is about 4 miles out and Decision Point is about  7.5 miles from Whittier.  It's called Decision Point cause that's where it opens up to Wells Passage and people get there and either head out or turn around when heading out to the sound.

When I was in Whittier last week there were plenty of Silvers jumping with in casting range of the jettys.

Argh...you are going to make me go to Whittier?  I HATE that place...but fish availability trumps my personal beliefs.  If I can get my work done, I'm headed to Kenai.  Maybe I'l try on the way back or even after work.

I don't have a kayak yet, but I'm interested in fishing Whittier. Never been there. Are there any decent places to fish off the bank?

Yes. It's limited but you can fish off the rocks and also by salmon run which is past Whittier by a mile or so.  I hear silvers are there.

Hey fellas ... If you haven't been hijacked by thoughts of easy driving to fish from Whittier... I'm doing the wAter taxi to Fox out of Seward this weekend... Just to get out. Picked up silvers off Barwell about. Month ago, and then responsibility claimed my summer. Ping me if you're interested.
