Hello NWKA Community,

I bought my first sea kayak about three years ago but since then, I have dedicated the majority of my time on the ocean to paddling rough water.  Local BC tidal rapids like Surge Narrows and Skookumchuck are in Rockfish Conservation Areas so the fishing gear stayed home on those trips.  The swell that rolls into Jordan River in the winter makes for fun kayak surfing and I never thought to bring my rod out there either.

On one of my first times out on the water, I met a guy (I believe it may have been tsquared) a good distance off the mouth of Victoria’s harbour.  Interested in finding out why anyone would paddle a kayak so far out from shore, I paddled out there too.  We talked for a bit and he gave me pointers, suggestions on fishing from a kayak.  Over the next two years, I would dabble with a rod on flat water days, never with much luck.

Earlier this summer, a fellow rough water paddler and I set out to fish from our kayaks with a bit more purpose; the goal being to finally catch salmon.

Mission Accomplished!

Sometimes I troll, sometimes I am out with a fly rod.  With a little trial and error and the tips from a guy named Tom 3 years ago, I am happy to report that fishing is a lot of fun and now, one more reason to get out on the water.

Hey Mario--glad to see you were successful! Where did you catch that beauty? I was looking for springs at Sheringham a couple of days ago but did not have any luck, did get some pinks though.

That fish in the picture being my first salmon, was caught about 100ft off of Gordon Beach in about 30ft of water.

I have also been fishing from Sheringham LH east to Muir Creek on the first tide line, from the mid point of Gordon Beach to a bit east of Otter Point (mostly in tight) and Possession Point to the south end of Donaldson.

I have not paddled/fished the waterfront (yet) this year and was skunked out on my only trip to Albert Head.

Pinks are fun.  I did bring in a spring but I am not sure if I should post its picture in this thread or on the "Big Fish Brag Board"

I hope to catch up with you on the water soon.
