I fished WG Thursday  and Friday and was able to pick up two halibut each day.  Once I got them to the filet table I found that two of them were "mushy".  The mushy ones were covered with the little leeches, does any one know if this is a good method of identifying the bad halibut?

It's not a sure fire way to tell but the mushy fish do seem to have more of them. They also seem to have "color" on the white side. Blotches of brown or yellow.

Mushy halibut this time of year is very odd. The water was like bath water in Seward. I wonder if it's the higher temps?

From what I've seen ... the occurrence of 'chalky' halibut increases later in the season.

Yah. I should clarify. Are we talking Chalky? To which I think the meat seems almost "drier" vs mushy.  Or are we talking the nutritional deficiency issue where the meat is translucent but like jello.

Water temps are 10 deg F above normal in some parts of AK. Sucks globally but should keep the fishing good later into the year!  Lol.

Jello for sure. I fileted both of them, but threw them out later...it just felt and looked terrible.  The meat is like blubber and is white.  The filets were also about 2/3rd the regular thickness
