Well, we tried out a couple boats this weekend. We had a 14' Native Manta Ray and a Tarpon 160. The Tarpon was definitely a better paddling boat but would have needed scupper stoppers if I was any heavier. The Manta Ray was a bit slower (not surprising) but would probably make an easier fishing boat as it was a little more stable which made it easier to sit side-saddle. They were both a lot of fun to paddle for the day.

How would the Prowler 13 and 15 compare to these boats? I suspect they would fall in the middle between paddling speed and fishing stability, but I haven't had a chance to try them out yet.

I have a P-13.  I'd guess the Manta Ray 14 and Prowler 13 are somewhat comparable... both are 28" wide, similar lengths.  From what I have read, both feel a little tippy initially (compared to boats like the Big Game and X-Factor), with good secondary stability, both have flared bows for a pretty dry ride.  The P-13 is fairly fast (though the WS 160 you paddled is one of the fastest fishing kayaks made).  The Prowler is super duper agile.

I haven't paddled the P-15, but I understand it is a wetter ride than the P-13, but faster.  The Trident 15 is a different kettle of fish entirely.

Thanks 3WT. The WS 160 certainly was fast - it felt just like a traditional sit-in kayak. A little squirelly to move around on deck, but not too bad. I'm curious how the P15 would compare - I'll have to check one out one of these days.

Are you test paddling these 'yaks with either the typical gear you would bring or equivalent ballast?  I know my P13 handles differently with my normal loadout than it does with just me in it.  If you had a concern about the ride being wet if you weighed any more This would be another way to determine the real life characteristics of the kayak.

I weigh roughly 190# and take probably 50+# of gear on the average outing.  The ride is a little wet (1/4-1/2" water in footwells) but it handles great and is quite stable.  I have fished standing up in it a few times.
