Planning on getting out on the Columbia today at PDX now that there are fish right here in Portland, I woke up to a monster case of the flu. Somehow, despite my girlfriend's sound advice I couldn't just sit around the house all day with all my gear set up and ready and all so I went on ahead and drove over to Gleason and noticed that the river looked pretty nice. I thought I was getting there late but the tide was only starting to move out properly when I got anchored in a kind of "hog-line light." It was surprising how few boats were out there (maybe 50). Anyway, absolutely nothing happened anywhere for the first two hours, but when the action happened it was my plug that got slammed. Once again, having the Hobie this year is making everything easier than in years past, so keeping the fish out of the hog-lines was not a real issue.
I fished for another couple of hours, trying to get another but it wasn't to be. In fact, I only saw one other fish besides mine hooked in the 4.5 hours I fished so I felt really fortunate to get the one flashy nook. The fish checker found a radio tag in it, so I filled out a card and ODFW is going to send me info about the fish. How cool is that?!
I probably just lucked out, but since I got to brag about my fish, I would like to share that I was using a chartreuse/silver Maglip wrapped with herring in 34-37fow.
Also, you have to believe that you are going to catch a fish even if no one else is catching. This mindset has paid huge dividends for me this year.

Congrats. I find fishing the best cure for the  spring and fall flues. ;)

And the roll continues!  Nice consolation for suffer with a summer flue.

Thanks everybody. It was a great day for feeling so crappy. Unfortunately I think I am paying the price today as I feel even worse. Good day to hang around the smoker anyway.
I love seeing all the salmon photos on this forum. They make me want to fish really bad every time I see a new one.

I don't think that fish lives up to your name - it's definitely not a minnow!

Cool story - love that you got out on an honest sick day. I've gone out in the yak ill a few times and while the setup and tear down seems like a big pain (to me) it was still really nice being on the water. You, on the other hand, even got a sweet fish out of the deal  ;D
