I have finally had a couple of days off from deckhanding, so I have been able to do some fishing for silvers out at Lowell Point and in Seward at the waterfall.

Two days ago, my girlfriend and I landed 4 silvers from the beach in about an hour. (No pinks, just silvers!!). I landed my two on my trout rod with 6lb test which was a blast.

Yesterday I took a friend out on the yak for a few hours from Lowell Point. It was his first time fishing since he was ten or so and he had a blast. It was great because he was stoked just to catch ANYTHING. It's always fun taking people out like that because it really reminds you that the fun is in the catching. I always get hung up on trying to get that one type or size fish....

He caught some flounder, black cod, pacific cod, rock fish, pollock, a couple pinks, and then finally a silver. I wish I had a picture of his face when the fish was ripping line out of his reel! All in all, we landed 4 silvers and lost one. It was just from 10-3 or so, so I am feeling pretty stoked!

One thing that I thought was strange, though I am not really sure if it is, was that he caught the Pacific Cod (about 10 lbs) in about 30 feet of water... aren't they usually deeper than that? It was right in front of the houses that line the southern beach on Lowell Point.

Also, I think it is definitely worth noting that it seemed like mooching with herring resulted in a lot more bi-catch. When we used Vibrax spinners by themselves or spinners behind 3-5oz. crescent sinkers, we only caught silvers.

Next time I will try to be better about taking more pictures!

Not a rockfish pro but slow trolling anything but especially bait near the bottom between Lowell pt and Tonsina cr will yield small copper and quillback rockfish.   I've caught good yellow eye in 250ft of water off Caines head but that's spotty and a long ways off.

I've only fishes it once or twice but I'm willing to bet the other side by the prisons with it's more cliff like topography may hold some rockfish.

Though the rockfish are small. Guessing 14 inches or smaller, if you cook them without filleting them, you will find a small rockfish has as much meat as a filleted out "normal" size rockfish.

Number one nemesis of kayak anglers in Southcentral AK is ling cod. Number two is Rockfish. Both are difficult without some type of water taxi.

Small rockfish are also available in Whittier. I've had the best success near the bird rookery on the "other side" from Whittier harbor. .

Yep your right Rudy I have caught rock fish off the cliffs over by 4th July and they are small, but that place is rough when the wind and tide change. Parts of my body got real tight this summer. I also stopped fileting my rock fish for the fact you waste so much meat.

I love the trip to caines head only have caught 2 silvers trolling that area. Debating on WG or Seward this weekend.

I picked up a decent yellow eye (my first!) just off Lowell Point Tuesday. I was jigging with a Williamson speed jig in about 300 feet of water, and he hammered it pretty hard. It worked pretty good for p-cod and black cod too. Also picked up one little chicken that had been in a pretty good scrape with something, and a flounder that was bigger than the halibut. Went back out wednesday and hammered the black cod with a few p-cod thrown in. All on herring though, the jig didn't get much action. 20 lbs of fillets, half of them black cod, made for a nice couple of days on the water.

Well 2nd day in Seward was not better than first 8 miles of kayaking and not even a bite, fished 4th of July beach down to the cliffs. Only cools thing was we got to be entertained by a family of porpoises and go figure my go pro was dead. They hung around for about 20 minutes and then moved north.

Fished from surface (try for some jumpers) to 280, I might have had one bite but I think it was the bottom. Flat calm no swell or chop so can't complain. Would have been nice if caught something. But enjoyed the day with girlfriend.
