Planning to go fish the salmon river on sunday. Does anyone have any pointers? Planning on trolling cut plug herring.  Can anyone give advice on how deep to troll? Going to paddle cause I don't got a Hobbie yet.  Feel free to join us. There will be 3 of us and fairly new to trolling salmon from a yak.

Are you asking about the Salmon river near Lincoln City on the Coast?  If so, what part are you planning to fish?

The river itself is pretty shallow especially at low tides.  From the launch west is mostly 1-2 feet deep from what I can remember.  Down around the "jaws" will prob. have the most boat traffic but has more depth.  As far as trolling depth in theses areas, 1-2 feet off the bottom.  Near the 101 and up there are some deep spots that I've fished with bobber and sandshrimp or eggs.  You can troll here depending on the amount of bobbers being tossed. If you are planning on crossing the bar into the ocean then I would default to my go to starting depth of 24-38 on the line counter with a Delta Diver and bait.

If you are planning on going out in the ocean I have a video of me and a buddy going out that might be helpful in crossing.

The Salmon River near Lincoln City has quite a few restrictions on gear/bait.    I don't think you can fish 2 hook herring rigs above McKnight Park (which only leaves a very short section out to the mouth). Check the regs.  This is one of the few rivers I've been checked by State Patrol where they wanted to look at my hooks, looked at my fish, asked for my tags... It's a really fun river to fish from a kayak, but definitely yield to the bankies casting their bobbers at you!

Thanks for the response.  We might try and fish pass the bar.  Do you know if the current there is strong? Looks like we may hit the out going tide in the morning. But we don't want to be swept out to sea...

If you haven't spent a lot of time in the Ocean id suggest heading for pacific. City. The fishing is usually better and I'm sure there will be some nwka folks there. The landing at the salmon River can also be a bit challenging. It will rip pretty good on the out going.

I agree with the Pacific City idea.  I may give PC a go on Sunday if the conditions look good.

Unfortunately I got an offer to do some tuna fishing, so I took that instead. However it was so rough out there we headed back in halfway out.  Should have stuck with the yak instead...

It would have been just as ugly yesterday on a yak.
