Decided it was too cold and too windy to attempt an 8 hour drive with my son to Homer.  So we hit Fire Lake in Eagle River.  First 15 minutes we caught a nice rainbow right around 20 inches.  Scars on its tail from a pike no doubt.  Then nothing for several hours and as the light started to fade, we started hitting a few hammer handles.  Two got off right at the kayak but no biggie.  If you catch them, you have to keep them and they were awful small so it probably was a good thing.

Managed a nice pike at the end.  Didn't measure it but I am guessing close to ten pounds...maybe 8.  I guess I don't know.  Still a pretty good fish for that particular lake.

Kind of odd hitting a lake.  But it was relaxing without any concern for waves or current.  Made for a good day with my son.

That's great! I never really considered fishing Fire Lake, I didn't think the trout would get that big.

There's not many of them but the ones in there are big I think due to the numbers of hammer handle pikes in the lake.  It was a pain to fish though because of all of the weeds.  The clear areas seemed devoid of any fish so you were constantly battling the weeds.

Nice day. I like the dragonfly pic. Got skunked at Harding but played with the FF marking bait fish.

Rudy, did you use anything specific to target the pike? I was planning on just using shrimp like I always do for the trout. I'll be in Eagle River this Sunday and want to bring my kayak out to fire lake.

Red label herring under a bobber. It's a,serious PITA with weeds. There is only one spot on that lake that seems to consistently produce.  I'd consider a fly rod and leech pattern for trout to stay above weeds.
