Does anyone have any ideas about how to repair a broken Pedal Shaft on the Hobie Mirage Drive V2?  The pedal and drive still function, but the threaded stainless shaft that attaches a nylock nut appears to have failed at the thread base.

I'd send a pic of that to Hobie,  interesting to see what they have has to say about that, how old is the drive?  Total failure of a metal shaft like that does not speak well of the quality of the metal rods used in the production of that shaft. Sorry, I can't help you as far as repairs go, I don't have a mirage drive manual, although I'm willing to bet someone on this forum will have info you can use. Should you decide to contact Hobie, please let us know what they say.
Thanks
John

Here's another view of the failure.  Definitely a material failure.  Drive is model year 2011 V2 drive.
I'd like to contact Hobie -- does anyone have that info readily available?

This is an unusual failure.  In recent years there was a flood of complaints from people who had the rectangular crank arms break on their Mirage Drives, sometimes multiple times.  Hobie may have fixed that problem.  I don't remember reading any complaints from people who had the pedal spindle break as yours did.  Another unusual aspect of the failure is that the spindle broke at the outside end, by the nut which holds on the pedal, which is a point which receives very little stress.  If the spindle was going to break due to stress, I would expect it to break next to the rectangular crank arm.  So you may have been the victim of an unusual part failure.

You're outside the warranty period for a 2011 drive, but let us know if Hobie nevertheless agrees to replace it.  You could offer to send them the busted spindle so they can try to figure out what happened.

It appears from your pictures that you broke your right pedal spindle.  On bicycles, the left pedal spindle has reverse thread, i.e. you have to turn it clockwise to loosen and remove it.  Hobie may have done the same thing on its pedal spindles so people could replace the stock pedals with bike pedals.  Because your right pedal spindle broke, you should just be able to grab it with a bike pedal wrench and twist it out in the normal direction.  But if Hobie doesn't sell pedal spindles separately from crank arms, don't bother trying to take out the spindle. Hobie doesn't list replacement crank arms and/or spindles in its catalog, so I don't know how they sell them.

The factory pedal spindle has threads machined on one end of it (most of which broke off inside the nut) - the other end of the spindle appears to be pressed into the rectangular crank arm and then has a cross pin to secure it- I don't see any threads on that end.  Are you sure you can put bicycle pedals on this design of a hobie drive? Both sides probably have the same right handed thread on that outside nylock nut, since the function is really just to retain the pedal, and theoretically doesn't get much stress.  I agree, very peculiar failure.

I contacted Hobie and they recommended that I go through the dealer to get replacement parts. They stated the replacement would be covered at no cost to me.  Not sure how that will work...but I contacted Next Adventure.  We'll see if they have the parts and will replace it.

Picked a bad time of year to have my drive out of commission!

Oops - I was looking at the aftermarket crank arms currently on my Mirage Drive, which have threaded bike-pedal type spindles, instead of the crank arms which came with my 2013 Mirage Drive which are currently in a box in my basement, and which, as you pointed out, don't have threaded spindles.

This is a really "bizarre failure" and Hobie is doing the right thing to replace the crank arm.

Satisfied customer!  Thanks, Hobie and Next Adventure.  Hobie shipped both pedal crank assemblies to my home address saving me the 4 hour drive to pick them up in Portland.  Back in bidness...
