Anyone been fishing the salem/eugene area? Haven't seen much of anything. Went out for some fall bass earlier this week and did really well. 10+ off the willamette! some nice fighting fish too!

Nice. I've been to your spot once but just paddling. Looks like I should take a rod next time.

Yeah I could only get them to bite a crankbait. Probably going to try trout and Kokanee soon around here too.

Hey, a Corvallis kayaker here.  The bass fishing looks fun, way to go! I've never done that.  I'll probably fish Yaquina Bay near the Jetty when the wind is calm enough.  Also looking for a coho opportunity.  And I'd really like to try to get out of Depoe or Pacific City if there is a really nice calm window this winter (might not be November though).

Did pretty well on my kayak for kokanee this year, jigged a few early season and finally got a downrigger set up so trolling deep was effective.  Odell is now closed, but I'll try jigging early season in 2016 since the regs changed next year.  Green Peter kokes are too small for the amount of effort, and a 5 fish limit at Detroit is over too fast.  Just my opinion.

Bass fishing is a blast! I just catch and release bass for fun. Next good day in the ocean I'll be taking the day off. It's been too long since I've been in the ocean since I've been salmon fishing so much. I'm going to try sitcoos if the coho come in at all. I'll probably go to detroit or big cliff before it gets too cold. I usually only keep a few and CnR the rest for fun.

Way to get after them, JS. Were you fishing near Minto Island park? Keep thinking I should put my Outback in on the Willie there.
Also very tempted to try Detroit for kokes, in spite of the 5-fish limit, as they can get pretty big. Until the Mongold ramp reopens, yakkers would have it pretty much all to themselves.

Awesome! Thats how you do it!
I loved catching smallies on the Willamette when I lived there(25yrs ago).  The spot that was really good in the fall for me was past Minto Brown up Browns Slough off River Road.  There is a small dirt pullout for a about two vehicles to fit.  It's a easy launch for kayaks.  If you haven't been there, or tried it, go between the lower point of the Island between the entrance to the slough and down river shore- there is rocky rip rap ledge in the current seam that gives some great action.  I mostly bounced pumpkin seed crawdads or gitzit's off the bottom october-november before the rain bumps the river up and then its pretty much over.
Really- nice healthy bass there, thanks for pics!

Yeah it was near Minto on the Willamette. That's what I've been thinking about Detroit. It hasn't had much boat traffic so the fish gave got to be getting bigger. And from salem its not too far.

Do you have a water temp when you were catching?

I've been watching the water temp in relation to smallmouth activity on the Willamette for a couple of years now. I know there's a certain point (downriver here, at least) after which I can't buy a bite to save my life. So I'd be curious to see what your water temp is up there, even though the situation is a bit different where you're at (not tidally influenced, etc.).

I think it was 54 degrees for the water temp. I'll probably be going out Thursday if anyone happens to have that off and wants to join.

JS: I'm thinking I may head for Siltcoos Thursday to fish for sea-run cutts and coho. Too many choices this time of year!

Your right Dave about the spot and the current being strong.  The inside backwater of the seam between the slough and the main current holds lots of fish, but holding safely in the yak while fishing can be a challenge.  There is so much structure to fish in the slough I wouldn't bother with the mouth if it looks to hazardous.  The pic of the largemouth in your post, the point of the island looks to be in the background.  You guys try  pitching rubber worms "wacky style" toward the shore at all?

JS, did you get out yesterday? I had to take a load to the Brown Island demolition disposal site, and kept an eye open for a kayak near Minto. Weather wasn't so nice.

Yeah it was a lot slower... water was very brown and the water temp went down. Only got 2 all day. Still a fun day.
