Me and the wife did the cruise 7yrs. ago with her whole family. Loved every minute of it. My mother-in-law book a package deal on Princess through Costco. If you book a year a head most of the time they will upgrade you to a outside balcony room for free. Lots to see and do well worth the money.

If you're referring to the Alaska Marine Ferry,  whether it's a "poor mans" cruise is a relative thing.  Last I checked its around $400 one-way, Bellingham to Skagway,  sleeping on deck.  It's still a deal if you need to get somewhere along the coast and don't have a boat or other transport.
"A venturesome minority will always be eager to get off on their own,
and no obstacle should be placed in their path;
let them take risk, for God sake, let them get lost, sun burnt, stranded, drowned,
eaten by bears, buried alive under avalanches -
that is the right and privilege of any free American."

Done it twice, it was breathtaking both times.

Best part is that every day you are somewhere new. Only 1 or 2 "day at sea" where you do nothing but ride the ship and drink in the bar.

We did Princess and NCL. I would give the nod to Princess on the basis of their open seating for meals. You don't have assigned times and tables. Its more like going to a restaurant and getting a table for your party.

NCL on the other hand, went to Sitka which was not on Princess' itinerary.

Get a balcony room, worth it. Plan on spending money on shore trips as well.

You mean the Inside Passage Cruise?
As of July 12th, I am, officially,  retired.
