The five data wires are all unused.  What product(s) have you been using to cap off those wires so they cannot short?

On the Elite 4 Chirp which I use for ice fishing, I cut off the cable, leaving six inches in case I ever want to replace the cable.  I wrapped duct tape around the end of the cable, leaving half of the width of the tape extending beyond the end of the cable.  Then I folded over the empty portion of the duct tape, and taped it down to the cable.  Not very high-tech, but it should work.

Thank you.  I'm concerned about saltwater causing a short.  I'd guess that cutting the wires to get rid of the exposed ends helps, but duct tape isn't really waterproof, is it?

I'll think on it because it's simple and it's cheap, and I like it when I can include both in a solution.

You could also cut the wires at slightly different lengths and just a thought , never tried it but plasti-dip the wires? Anyone try that , the stuff you can dip tool handles into. You could also individually silicon each one on wax paper before sealing them into what ever you decide.

Double over the end of the cable and cover the exposed wires with dielectric grease and marine grade shrink wrap (effectively making an eye the end of the cable).

I cut mine off put shrink tube over it and then filled the end of the shrink tube with Goop.  I have tipped it lots and have never had an issue with the fishfinder.

Are these wires (and the warning about short-circuits) not the problem Lowrance makes them sound?

I like the shrink-tube solution.  It's also cheap and simple.

Thank you all.

I cut mine off, stuck the end in small flex tube (irrigation), then filled with silicon caulk.

I cut my wire off leaving 2 inches, just in case.  I purchased some of the waterproof wire nuts that are used for  underground sprinkler wire and twisted one on.  The wire nut is small, like a regular wirenut but is full of waterproof grease. it went on tight and I have never had any issues.

I think the heat shrink method would be hard to beat for function and value.    Especially with an entire kit of misc sized marine heat shrink can be picked up from Harbor Freight for 6 bucks.  Tons of uses for the stuff  beyond kayak wiring.
I used to think that Bigfoot might exist. Then I saw the reality shows where they are looking for them.  Now I am certain they don't

I guess I went to the extreme by ordering a cable without the data wires.

I can't find a power cable for the Elite series that doesn't include the NMEA cable anywhere in the Lowrance catalog so you went to impressive extremes.

I cut the wires at on the diagonal, so none are the same length, dipped the ends in a blob of Goop, put an overly long piece of heat-shrink on them, bent the excess heat shrink back over the wires and smeared Goop on it, then put another piece of heat shrink over it all.

If water can get into that, then it deserves to short out.

It makes me chuckle to think about the extremes a noob will assume are needed.  Especially when the noob going to extremes is me.

I have an elite 5 hdi, but I am using the power cable from a 4x without navigation.

Most hardware stores carry "liquid electrical tape". Just coat the ends and let it dry, very durable and made for wiring and will handle the heat if used on live wires as well. I would coat any exposed connections etc.
I use it on my power cords at work, I can drag them through the mud and water without tripping the GFCI.
