I'm looking to give halibut a try this weekend. Midday tides are good, weather looks half decent and it's open as of Feb. 1st-- anyone on the South Island interested? I'm thinking of launching at Weir's beach for William Head or Whiffin Spit for the bluffs off Sooke or even Muir Creek . It depends on the weather. My schedule looks like Saturday or Monday, if anyone is interested....let me know.

Those look like some nice launch areas!  Hope to hear some good reports of hali-catching.  How deep is the water for the halibut in those areas?

185 -250 ft is the depth for those spots. They are not too far off shore.

Not a sniff. I launched from the Cheanuh marina ramp at Becher Bay where I keep my power boat in the summer. The wind out on the open JDF Strait was too much but it wasn't too bad in the outer bay. It sure felt good to be out on a beautiful sunny day.
