I didnt see a place here for NJ-NY kayak fishing, but after checking this board since my Alaska trip I would like to add a little from the East Coast.

My daughter just got done with her summer job and with only a few days off before her teaching job, me, my wife and my daughter did a nice kayak trip off of Staten Island NY.   I loaded three kayaks on top of my Subaru and we launched just after lunch.  We paddled and peddled around in a sheltered harbor and then made it out into Raritan Bay.  When we were through the inlet I noticed a good amount of birds diving and fish jumping about a half mile away.  I left the girls and made it there and made about 10 casts with nothing.  My daughter came from behind and made one cast and she was hooked up with a nice 8-10 lb. bluefish that she handled great.

Now the fun part.....my wife had no intentions of fishing and has only been out with me a couple of times and this was her first trip in salt water.  I paddled over to her kayak and made a cast with my pole and stuck the rod into her rod holder.  She started to pedal and within 10 seconds, she was getting pulled backwards, sideways and every way possible.

She was screaming the entire time and I am surprised that the Coast Guard did not come with all  the commotion.  I was busy taking pictures and my daughter came by just in case she went over.  After finally getting the fish to the kayak, I came over and released the fish.  She could not believe that a fish that size was taking her in all directions.

Here are a couple pictures of the day.
I got skunked yesterday but it was still one of my best days out on the water.  So I went out this morning and landed a pretty good northern pike right near my house.

Enjoy

Sorry the first few are so big.  Maybe someone can downsize them?

Thanks

Nice family day Dan.  Did the girls outfish you?   :toothy9:

I  moved this to "The Traveling Kayak Angler" forum where we place reports from outside the NW.

Nice report.  My first "sleigh ride" was from a 15 lb bluefish in Long Island Sound back in 95 or 96.  Smoked or grilled ASAP they aren't a bad tasting fish.

Oh jeez, more east coast fish porn, this is tough to take. ::)

I like bluefish, especially the "snappers". But then, I don't leave them laying out in the  sun to cook, like a lot of the folks I saw back east. Treated with respect, they're very good.
