I had plans to camp at devils lake this weekend, but had to change them.  I want to get out there and try something new before the weather (and work) keep me from going.  I would really like to hit the salt, craving fish tacos!!!  As you know pretty much a new-B.  Where would you guys suggest I try, Nehalem Bay, T Bay?  Anywhere, don't mind driving either!

Thanks in advance for any info!   ;)

Depot Bay......

Small protected harbor.  No river flow to fight.  Only problem is that this weekend the seas will be pretty big and the winds will be whipping.
Check with Fishsniffer about whether these conditions are too much for that area.  Personally, I'd take a pass.

I'm looking out the window, just south of Depoe Bay and the waves are starting to pick up and the winds are brewing.  You might give Coast Guard Depoe Bay a call and see whet the bar conditions are.

Yeah, the ocean hasn't looked so good for a kayak launch, least not yesterday. The Nestucca and Salmon rivers are starting to produce, and if nothing else are very pretty to paddle. I spent yesterday at Olalla Lake, No fish, got sunburned and had a wonderful time anyways, it's a nice lake but wouldn't recommend it for the holiday. Hope ya find the perfect place this weekend!

Just found the site, joined the same day!  This summer my kayak fishing buddy and I were on the Columbia fishing for sturgeon (The Dalles) , we were aware of the stares and began to doubt our sport.  Guess we have found the club!  We released three fish that morning.

We are in the process of planning a trip to the coast.  My choices are Newport or Depoe Bay.  Depoe Bay is my first choice.  We have not put in salt water yet-  that is our goal for the summer.  I was thinking on calling Tradewinds Charter or the Sea Hag Restaurant for eyes-on-water report to go with a weather forecast.  But that was before finding this site and all the great info.

My last trip was on Deschutes in Bend at Southern Crossing yesterday.

Sorry for ramblin-

Welcome aboard Scott!  Check out the upcoming Pacific City Tournament.  There'll be other salt newbies there and several old salts for help and encouragement.

We just got back from Newport today.  Man I wish I had a kayak to try out in the salt Wednesday.  We let the kids play on the beach side of the south jetty about 50 yards from the jetty itself.   The water was a mild ripple all the way out as far as we could see.  Nothing more than about 6-10" of a wave.  Further south towards South Beach SP, the waves were much higher and looked like it would be a flipper for sure.  :o

We did see a person in a single yellow kayak in down in the bay as we went over the Yaquina bridge north sometime around noonish.  Not sure what he/she was actually doing, crabbing, fishing, or just paddling around.
