Bring a burlap sack along.  As the limbs are freed up, grab them thru the bag and pull them in.  Eventually you'll have the thing in there.    ;D

Let me know how you plan to "target" them.
The only one I ever caught was hungry and it came out of it's hole for my Big Hammer.
Outside of that, I have zero idea as to where one would be at any given time to actually "target" them.

And boy would I love to bag an Octopus each trip out, them are good eats!!  :headbang:

never done it so I'm still figuring it out. I think two methods. one is to build smaller lair traps I can winch up with a downrigger. probably a 5 gallon weighted buckets on a buoy like shrimping. that's the sorta passive way.

second is to use a crab jig. I  made one  for the purpose and also big halibut.

I have no idea if it will work. but the guys who shrimp catch them all the time. I agree, I'd be ecstatic if I got one every several trips.

So what's the best way to cook an octopus? or maybe eat it raw?? I caught a nice one off a power boat a few years back but I released it since I had no clue what to do with it.
Fishing relaxes me. It's like yoga except I get to kill something.

I first dip the octopus in scalding hot water for a 30 seconds or so.  Then I take rock salt and rub the heck out of it to remove the outer skin.

Then you are supposed to either cook it super fast like blanch it....or cook it low, long and slow.

But I have thrown whole tentacles on the barbecue and cooked it for 15 to 20 minutes and then sliced it super thin to eliminate most of the chewiness.  Others pound the crap out of it to tenderizes it.  I hear you can grind it to make some pretty good patties.

If you can get the texture down right, I think it is one of the finest eating things you can haul out of the ocean.

My favorite is raw, straight out of the ocean.  I know it's kind of barbaric but there is no fresher octopus than the one that's still squirming around in your lap.

I also second what Rudy said.  The ginormous tentacles I took home from Neah Bay a couple of years ago got brined then beaten and then slow cooked for a couple of hours. The suction cups on that were huge and were easy to pop out after cooking.  The consistency was like tuna but it still had all that sweet octopus umami flavor.

F@*¥¢€®©§  ALL of that.  I am a Midwesterner... If I haul one of those up... I'm cutting line,  maybe burning my boat.  They look like giant tarantulas of the sea.   Apologies to those of you who like them... But you are weirdos.  ;-)

Here in Arizona I have friends that eat Rattle Snakes and say they are good eating, tast just like chicken. I say if I want something that tasts like chicken I just buy some chicken. I still kill a few Rattle Snakes while quail hunting every year, I don't like them, but I will stck with chicken for dinner!

LOL Rattlesnake is way WAY better then chicken. But Octopus is ok to eat but in mho makes better bait then food. Then again I only tried cooking it once so it could of been my own cooking.
