The fish that broke me off on Derby day and I had a bit of a swap.  I put the hooks in it, and it put metaphorical hooks in me.  I have to try again next weekend to see if I can get an off-the-books king or two in the freezer before April.  Is anybody else going to be fishing in Homer this weekend?  Weather forecast looks cold and wet, but fishable so far.

Do any of our fish-catchers want to share what worked for them at the Derby?  I got my take-down on a Brad's Cut Plug, "black jack" color, with a headless red label herring stuffed inside, trolled behind a hot spot flasher on my fishing line, with an e-chip pro-troll dummy flasher off my cannonball.  I had a lot going on down there, but it worked!

I wasn't going to break out my kayak until 2nd week of April....but, if the weather condition isn't horrible I'll make it down there for Saturday afternoon to Sunday morning trip.  I want to test my downrigger and few other tricks.

I caught many WG kings but never Homer King so this will be fun either way.

50/50 for me.

We got both our takedowns on green label herring behind a triangular fish flash flasher.  Son caught his using a 12oz sinker fishing half way down in 50ft of water.

I hooked (and lost ) my fish while taking a pee in 20 ft of water with my down rigger cranked up but dead still 15ft down.  i saw tons of marks when I was shallow.  More so than deep, but it changes everyday and with the tides and water clarity.

Kardinal_84 is 20 feet of water the optimal depth in Alaska to relieve ones self? On a serious note let me just say you guys up there are all hard core, great fishermen and from the reads , good friends. Keep up the great posts and tell your spotlight successor he should be dang proud of his tournament fishing experience. As I know you are.

MOJO Jojo it was tough finding a semi secluded spot on a flat ocean. I frankly prefer 100ft for relief.

Gravesjacob. I agree. try everything! I've caught them so far on herring, anchovies, hooochies, bucktail flies, mylar tube flies.  I think it will work!

upnorthtex,  since you will have sometime, I am confident we can get you on kings. what is your schedule again? June you can hit the beloved ditch..aka ship creek.  depending on run strength, there are kings available in the saltwater through July.  We will do what we can to get ya on fish.  With more and more kayak anglers here, someone will figure it out!!!  That's what makes kayak fishing Alaska so much fun!  It's ALL new!!!!!

I'll be having a mad electrical wiring/installing session when I get home this evening, and will try to be on the road to Homer as early as I can be on Saturday.

Bilge pump, stern light and lighted compass should be up and running this weekend.
