On April 7, the ice broke up on Lindbergh Lake in Western Montana.  On April 9 I went kayak fishing.  There was some loose ice floating in front of the launch site.

It still looked like winter in the mountains.

The air temperature was in the 60’s, but I was dressed appropriately for the water temperature.

About a mile and a half up the lake I encountered unbroken ice.

I was trolling along the edge of the ice, when a couple showed up paddling in sit-inside kayaks.  Neither was wearing a PFD or a spray skirt.  The guy was wearing a cotton shirt and cotton shorts.  I guess if you’re tough, you don’t need a lot of fancy equipment.

Not wanting to be an asshole, I didn’t mention that they were dangerously unprepared for the water temperature, and should have been wearing PFDs even if the water had been warm.  But I should have said something.

Momma always said..."stupid is as stupid does".
You can lead a horse to water, but it takes a damn strong man to drown him.
Glad to see you were safely prepared.

How deep is the lake where you took the picture of that guy?  Maybe it's the light and color of the water, but it looks about knee deep there.

I took that picture when he returned to the launch site.  I wish I had taken a picture of him at the edge of the ice, but I was busy fishing.

I'd a probably said something along the lines of , if your going to fall in and drown due to hypothermia setting in long before you reach shore , please wait till I'm gone be use I hat waiting around for the coroner to finish his paper work.
