I pretty much disappeared from NWKA for the past 18 months----had some angina at the Umpqua Dunes, which turned into an angiogram at Group Health, which showed 80-90% blockage, followed in October '14 with a 4-way coronary artery graft (CABG).  A few months to fully recover, and 6 months to be able to lift the Hobie adventure onto the car.  But---now playing tournament racquetball, and tennis and....fishing???  Those bozos on the NOF talks could not agree with the tribes on season, so.....Puget Sound closed to salmon for the foreseeable future in 2016, along with about 50 creeks and rivers which support anadromous runs.  I am SO pi$$ed!!!

I fished the Chetco Derby last October, it was much fun but only one other kayaker, many many PBs only 100yards off the beach. But---a long way from Vashon Island!~!Now looking for places to fish in CA---Sooke??  Victoria??  And ---is there a summer season in OR?  Tillamook Bay??

I'd love to hear from anyone with experience on salmon along the north shore of the Strait, so I can plan a couple trips north.  Please PM me with advice, fish tales (lies OK too) and just plain diary entries of successful trips.

You can't go wrong with buoy 10 on the Columbia in August. Ocean salmon off Pacific City in the summer usually means you are guaranteed meat. That is, in my case, if I drop a crab pot before trolling. Dungeness takes the sour flavor of a salmon skunk out of the mouth really well.

The only thing that can go wrong at B10 in august is an early closure.

Pacific City????  In Tillamook county, way south of the Columbia.  I am trying to find a spot to launch  and fish my Hobie in the Columbia, any info for me???  Buoy 10 is hardly kayak water in August.  Prefer a place where there's nearby camping, on the WA side so I don't have to buy an OR license.

Doesn't matter if you launch from or camp on either side of the C, you can use you Wa license and do not have to purchase an Or license.
I have been told, altho I have not tried it, that fishing up above the Astoria bridge in August can be productive, certainly much, much less crowded with fewer PBs. As always, keep an eye on the ever changing fishing regs in both Or and Wa.

Thanks John!  IS the river open now?  Any springers in the river yet?

Unless somethings changed that I unaware of, NO, the Columbia is closed for springers, although I don't usually pay alot of attention to Columbia salmon regs until August. I don't follow Wa fishing regs too much, I know that there have been some major changes this year so be careful and check the current regs. Interesting article from Bill Monroe talking about this years chinook/coho seasons.

I can't believe it took me so long to find this thread!

Welcome back Terry!  I was wondering where you'd been.  Glad to see you're back in the game.

Thanks!!   I was just out taking pics of my kayak hangar under the roof of the carport, will post on that thread about how we store our boats.  The hanger works great, and only cost about $35 from Amazon.  Just looked it up,  it's $29.99 from Dicks Sporting goods

Welcome back!! There's a late run of chinook in Makah Bay around early-mid Sep. Most fish are less than 1/2 mile offshore. Then you have rockfish and ling to round out a mixed bag stringer.
