It was great getting back on the yak. Sure have missed getting to hangout with everyone. And finally start replenishing the freezer.

Got the wife out for the first time and it will not be her last. She flat put it on me. Which is typically what happens when she goes.

With marine weather like that, I could even get my wife out there! Great catches!

Pretty awesome!!!  How far out do you have to paddle to get into halibut habitat areas? That is ideal surf!!

It really depends. There were some monsters caught last year a few hundred yards of shore in 25', then others will make 10-20 mile loops. All of ours came within 2 miles of launch.

General rule of thumb is the farther out you go, the bigger and more plentiful the fish are.  But during May, we get large runs of hooligan (large smelt) and herring.  As mentioned above, many fish are caught in 20 ft of water this time of year because those baitfish are in close.

Halibut size should increase through the summer.  Some of our largest fish have come in September.  Though you still can catch them shallower, as the season progresses, I switch from 20 to 65 ft of water to 50 to 80 ft or so.  Doesn't sound like much but 50ft of water is about 1.5 miles out, 80 ft about 3 miles offshore.
