Hello All,

I am headed to Eagle Crest for the memorial day weekend.  Anyone know of some good lakes/tips for trout or kokanee.  I am thinking of heading to Odell or Crescent Lake but am open to any suggestions.  I am somewhat new to trolling for trout.  Any tips on what tackle/lures to use?

Thanks for your help in return!

I'll be fishing at Crane Prairie this weekend (Rock Creek Campground) if you decide to venture out. Apparently there's some kokanee in there, hit or miss, but some monster rainbows and brook trout too.

Most people like to use a combo of wedding rings or squid hoochies with a dodger, some prefer just the spinners naked. Also some folks swear by using "White Shoepeg Corn" on the tip of the hook, some say to add scent to it (tuna oil or pro cure,) others say it's not necessary at all. I have found that the corn certainly doesn't hurt and sometimes the rods with corn do better than those without. You can also simply jig for kokanee if you can find a good school of them. You can use simple "buzz bomb" type lures. Bright reds and Pinks work well for all the mentioned lures. Watch your leader length if you're using a dodger, you want the dodger to really sway the lure (if you're using one.)  I think everyone probably has a slightly different method they like.

Also Tyler's video here is pretty spot on.

There is a plethora of good lakes around there. Odell and Crescent are certainly on the list. Lava, Elk, Wikeup, Crane Prairie or just about any body of water on the Cascade Lakes Highway. The best catch rates are going to mean you have to get out of bed early! Bring a headlamp. Dress appropriately for very cold (and wet) conditions. I wouldn’t recommend it without immersion gear, especially if you are going by yourself.

Sounds like you might be able to pair up with iairj84 (Matt) at Crane Prarie. I prefer to float a worm on that lake over plugs and spoons. When you find the right spot you will know it!

When I say "float a worm" I mean just a worm on a hook and a splitshot sinker or no sinker at all. inject air to inflate the worm with a syringe/needle You can tip with corn if you want. Cast out and wait. Keep your line straight as possible and not too much slack. Keep your rod in your hand, not in a holder. You read the strike by the slight movement of your line. This is very finesse fishing!
You can also just drop your line straight down and a couple cranks off the bottom (no air) and hold your rod as still as possible.

More than likely we won't make it out there until Saturday late morning. We have to make the drive from Portland that morning since we have a party to attend Friday night or we would've left then. Depending on when we get up it could be 10ish, or could be closer to noon.

Lake Billy Chinook would be closer than the lakes South of Bend.  You should be able to jig up a limit of Kokes in under an hour and then go find some Bulls.  Rainbows, Browns and tons of little Smallies are also available.   It's a cool lake.

It will probably be crowded that weekend if the weather is nice, but what lake won't.  Hitting it at dawn should give you a few good hours of fishing before the hungover hit the water.

I am thinking of lake billy chinook but I know this is a big boating weekend there.  I may head to a different lake.  I am going to have to do a lot of research.
