So, I am curious as to why it says a total of 38 users logged on today but it says most online today is 12?. Seem's contradictory. It's always like that. What gives?

 38 total logged on. 12 logged on at one time?

hmmm, now it went up to 14 and theres only two people online....wacky

i believe it is referring to most online at one time today although its not very clear you are correct

and the total online today is just the sum of everyone who has been on today wether at the same time or not

but it was at 12 about  an hour ago and then went to 14, and there was only a couple people online at that time..

It is as you say.  However, I will add that the count of the concurrent number logged on includes guests and spiders (I think ... hmmmm).
