Hi... my name is Zac.  I have been reading a bunch about kayaking.  About a year ago I bought a couple of kayaks at big 5.  A cheaper SOT.  I intended them for local ponds and lakes but when I heard of the idea of taking them into ocean I thought, Wow... how cool.  So I have been looking at kayaks and reading post... etc.  This weekend I am taking a class with Alder Creek.  Not sure if it will help but I want to be confident that I know the basic safety stuff before going into the ocean.  In the next couple of weekends my wife and I are going to Lincoln city.  If the ocean seems calm we'll rent a couple of SOT and, if it is advised, we'll try going into the surf.  Either in Lincoln City or Pacific City.
So much to learn.  I wonder if my current kayak will work for a while.  Cheaper tamarack fishing kayak I got at big 5.  I am also wondering if an inflatable kayak by hobie would be a good option.  I also want to know if I am a fool for even thinking about going in the ocean without somebody who is experienced , for the first time.... and the list goes on.
I am looking forward to gaining some expertise from this group.   Thanks for your time
Zac

Welcome to the addiction.  I highly advise going with someone at least your first time.  Pick the right days and conditions and it's smooth sailing.

"Fair well and adieu to you sweet Spanish ladies.... Fair well and adieu sweet ladies of Spain" ............ " we're going to need a bigger boat" .......

Bring up any memories of sitting in a theater with popcorn.... If you ain't geared, prepared, and experienced in the ocean DON'T GO ALONE
I hope that was a clear enough warning.
If it ain't 13 ft or longer without an experienced guide please don't go we don't want to read about you on the news.

1. I took that class. It was worth the $50 to learn basic paddling and boat handling skills. I stood in the kayak. I deliberately dumped it in deep water and hauled myself back in. Great learning and confidence booster.

2. Going in the ocean is something you shouldn't rush.

3. I won't say it's impossible but most kayak rental places are renting SINKs not SOTs.

4. Yes.

5. Have your wife take the class, too.

(4) above refers to the question about Hobie inflatables.
Let's eat, Grandma !
Let's eat Grandma !

Punctuation. It saves lives.

First thing is look at the swell forcast http://magicseaweed.com/Cape-Kiwanda-Surf-Report/560/

Second is see who is going from the forum, not to babysit but if no one is going there's a reason.

Third make sure you have emersion gear a wetsuit or drysuit.

Fourth try to get some saltwater experience in Tillamook Bay first.

Fifth and most importantly no fishing trip or fish is worth your safety.

If you must go to sea jump on a charter boat out of Depoe or Garibaldi

I have no problem taking newbies into the open ocean after I have fished with them in the Tillamook Bay at least once preferably 2-3 times, take your time have fun and go really slow, I'm talking turtle....
