I go out of Whittier about 2 times a month on a power boat and we always kill it about 30-60 miles out but it would be a lot of work out of a kayak unless you mother shipped.  I did get lucky and catch a king trolling right outside the harbor 2 weeks ago waiting for my buddy to make it through the tunnel. I was trolling about 100 yards off the break wall in 56ft of water about 20ft down with a 7oz mooching weight with fresh cut plug herring.

Like I already said a mother ship would be a must and a great place that isn't to far(30-35 miles) would be Port Nellie Juan and Kings Bay.  You can camp, there is great shrimping in the immediate area, decent yelloweye, and halibut during the right time of year.  As long as Wells Passage isn't to rough you can make it to Culross Passage with a smaller boat but you really have to plan with the weather.

I think like many people have said, the powerboaters head out a LONG ways to catch any fish consistently in Whittier.

The same is typically true for rockfish and halibut.

I have caught decent yelloweyes in Blackstone Bay.  Not a lot, but they are there.  That's a lot closer to Whittier than some of the other places mentioned.  Here's a few pics.  Apparently there is this strange activity called sightseeing and touring that people do off a kayaks without fishing rods though its a little puzzling to me:

Spot on the forums went to Cochrane Bay which is one bay farther from Whittier and some success.  His story is here: http://www.kayakfishingmagazine.net/articles/114-trip-reports/1807-cochrane-bay-alaska.html

Yea, I've been told there is some decent shrimping in Blackstone as well. But if we're gonna take the time to put the big boat in the water we are heading out far though.  I bet if we all split the price we could find a landing craft that holds 10-15 yaks to take us out past Culross a little ways. I'd be in, I know the area pretty well and could set us up in a sweet area.

I'd probably go in on a mothership trip if the dates worked out for my schedule and the cost was reasonable.

I will call the water taxi today to get an estimate for a run to Perry Island. Once we know an average cost we can look at dates that may work the best.

Wow - taxi into PWS / perry Is. Sounds good.

Dates on the calendar are filling in fast for me though.   If they work out, I would be really interested.

Did the water taxi plan die. I was interested in the idea. Not sure I could make the trip though with my timeline.

It will probably be mid August before I can do it.

Ok let's plan a date for this.  I can provide shuttle for two more kayaks in my new kayak hauler. Weekend of August 6 and 7 look best for me right now.  But can do weekdays if that works for anyone else.
