So who has fished Seward? Any fishy places there? I'd like to try something with a shorter drive than whiskey.

I have fished Seward, but still looking for a good place to reliably catch a halibut.   No help for you there, but have picked up p-cod, Juvy Sablefish, Silvers and Chums, and a few rockfish and very small juvy halibut off the wast side between the Lowell Beach (south of Millers Landing) and Derby cove.  It might be a bit early to pick up silvers that close in, but its a nice area to Kayak.   Derby cove has a good landing to take a rest break - we have pulled out there a few times for a bite to eat or such.

I still want to try a little saddle thats not too far off the west side, just before Caines Head, and may do that run next time I am down.    I have not yet done the trip around the Caines Head to camp the beach or cabin on the south side.   There is a water taxi from Lowell Beach (Millers) to that beach that might be good if they can handle a few hobies, otherwise it might be a good outbound tide ride.

Bear in mind that it is common for south winds to kick up in the afternoon, so your return trip can get a bit bumpy if you day trip.   Depending on wind direction you may need to hug the west shore to get shelter behind Caines Head instead of the direct run back.

I just fished Res Bay Monday. Knew it was going to be early for silvers, but thought I'd do some trolling and see if I could get lucky, or maybe find a chum or two. Only takedown I got was a cod, in fact all I caught all day in 10 hours of fishing was 2 cod and a juvi sablefish. I put in at Lowell and trolled down to Derby Cove and back. Saw 2 jumper chums, both starting to turn already, in Derby Cove. I stopped quite a bit along the way to jig or soak herring and cod bellies, but never found any salmon or rockfish, or even a decent concentration of cod. Hardly marked a fish on the sonar either. First time I've fished Seward without at least a rockfish or two. Hopefully the silvers start showing up in kayak range pretty soon. Maybe the Nash Rd. side would have been better. It is a really nice paddle out towards Caines Head. Actually had some overcast skies, a nice change from this horrible hot unending sunshine we've been getting in Anchorage.

AKRider is right, halibut are pretty unreliable in the bay. I don't even really expect them, I think I've only caught two there.

Recently heard rumors of halibut in 200' feet not far off the Prison... but I can't remember where I put in last time I did that side of the bay.   Where is the good launch point off Nash ?

I've got a message out to my friend who was yammering about 'butts on the NE side, and see if I can shake a better description of the location loose.

I've only launched from over there once, and I'm pretty sure I went out from that final access point just before the do not enter signs for the big industrial complex. It was right into the teeth of the wind, but there is a calmer pocket of water on the left created by the jetty, especially good for landing if it gets hairy. Actually drove out there this time contemplating another try, but it was pretty full of snaggers so I opted for Lowell. Don't entirely trust them to hold their fire until I'm out of range.

The access point at the boat lift is no longer available.  I was down there a couple weeks ago and it is closed.

There was a sign that said closed but didn't really mean closed, just was there to keep traffic down and no campers. 4th of July I was there, the sign was changed to, "no overnight camping, closes at 11pm" They are building a marina for large ship moorage there, so maybe in the future it will be easy to launch from. There's a trail to leads to other side of the dry dock with some unofficial camping spots and beach access. Wouldn't be the most ideal place to launch from, but as long as the wind isn't howling it would be ok.

It looked open when I was there a week ago. I drove out to the parking lot, and there were other cars parked and people fishing. There was a no camping sign up, the same one you see everywhere that you can park a vehicle in Seward.
