Taken by surprise on salmon gear, anglers found themselves in some serious tug-of-wars lasting up to an hour. Charter skipper Lars Robison aboard "Samson," out of Dockside Charters in Depoe Bay, lost several light coho salmon rigs when he trolled through schooled tuna just three miles out but returned to port with two albacore in the catch

Holy Hell!!!  I wish this kind of event was predictable.  I'd love to paddle out and into Tuna!

I think we all wish that, but if it was, someone would take severe advantage of it and kill off the tuna.

Great article! Sure would be fun to fight tuna from a kayak all day! I'm not to sure how many I could carry, and keep cold, but it sure would be great to find out!

On a kayak I'd think you'd be about plugged with 4 tuna.  Given they average around 20lbs that's 80lbs of fish.  Unless you're in a PA, Big Game, or other really high weight capacity kayak that will get to about your weight limit, especially if you're carrying enough ice to properly chill them.

I think I would be stuffing my hull like they were pool noodles! Oh, the clean-up of the carnage would be SO worth it!

You're probably about right. I ride a trident 13, so 4 tuna would probably be plenty to carry with ice.

Hell if they are only 2 miles offshore I'd tow a spare kayak loaded with catch bags and ice!

Just process them as you land em and you could easily double the number you bring home.   Just keep your feet out of the water... ;D

My wife thinks fishing is merely guys wandering around like idiots swinging sticks in the air. Many of my trips prove how smart she really is.

As someone who tuna fishes regularly, as much fun as it would be fighting one on the kayak, I don't think I'd do it.  To properly care for the tuna you need to bleed them immediately, then ice.  Sharks generally hang around schools of tuna (mostly Blues from our experiences), bleeding them and carking at sea creates this problem.  Maybe get a couple quick and head back.

Get the largest icemule backpack cooler and this isn't a problem.
