I'm having trouble getting the squelch set where I can hear voices and not noise/static.

The manual says to press the SQL key and CH UP to increase squelch, but that doesn't seem to be doing anything.

What's the procedure, please?

UPDATE:  You don't hold the SQL key, you only tap it and see if the VOL display changes over to the SQL display, then adjust squelch.  The manual is misleading and SH Tech Support is great.

Are your keys locked?

Per the instructions.

SQL switch (Left side)Press this key to activate the squelch adjusting mode. Press the CH▲ orCH▼ key to adjust the squelch threshold level. Press and hold the squelch key for 3 seconds to open the squelch, allow-ing you to monitor the operating channel. Press this key to resume normal(quiet) monitoring.

Shouldn't be.  The "lock" symbol is not showing on the screen and all the buttons and functions are working.

I'll call SH on Monday.

Thank you.

You are holding down the squelch button for at least 3 seconds, right?
Does it show on the screen?

If not:
You are not pushing the correct button..
You are not pushing the correct button hard enough..
The correct button is faulty.

Nope, doesn't show on the screen.  The manual says the squelch screen should appear but then, kindly, doesn't give an illustration...

I'm pressing the #$@& button that's labeled SQL for a long time (it beeps at about 3 seconds) and hard enough to crush a pebble, and the battery is at full charge.

I'm pretty certain this unit isn't working correctly and I expect I'll end up having to send it in.  But if SH troubleshoots it over the phone and it works, I'll post what I was doing wrong and how to do it correctly...

Thanks, 'though.

HX851   I push the squelch button once and a little volume level indicator shows up at the top of the screen.  I push up or down to adjust the squelch and it functions as intended.  Might not be too helpful since this is a different model number, but Here's a screen shot of mine

YOU DON'T PRESS AND HOLD THE SQL BUTTON FOR THREE SECONDS.

To adjust squelch, you TAP the SQL button and look to see if the VOLUME display changes to SQL, then use the CHANNEL up or down keys to adjust as needed.

Don't hold the SQL key and don't hold it for three seconds, just tap it.  Who'd'a thought that!

The manual is badly worded and misleading.  Technical Support - who were great by the way - says the majority of their calls are about squelch.

So there you go.  The manual is wrong.

Craig and Barb, thanks for your suggestions.
