So I fished Thursday through Friday with a frat brother and my son.

Thur:  A half dozen small chickens at Whiskey Gulch. 2 worth keeping.
Friday:  Homer...nadda zip, zilch.
Saturday, we hit the Kenai River desperately looking for anything.  Shore fished for pinks...nadda.
Sunday:  Hit the water in Homer at 6:30am...perseverance pays off.  Ultra hot King bite.  Couldn't keep the bait down for more than 10 minutes without a strike.  Of course I was fishing alone since the other two were sleeping.  Woke up the other two and they both got kings in less than 30 minutes.  Green label herring in 50 to 60 ft of water about half way down.

So its not consistent like it typically is later in the fall but if you try hard enough, you run into the good bite.  Seems like first light and last light is 5 times more productive.  One of the kings we kept was a white one.

Thanks for the report, I'm headed down to Homer Wednesday through Friday. Did you try any artificial lures for the Kings? That's all I tried last time I was there and got skunked.

Fishing relaxes me. It's like yoga except I get to kill something.

Thanks for the report. I actually had the boat loaded and got up early Sunday to drive down to Homer. Seems I talked myself out of a good bite. Do you think the timing is more related to time of  sun up/down or tide?  I've only fished down there a couple times. Lots still to find out.

I think the light level is the key to bringing bait and fish up closer to the surface.  While I still like the water flowing out from the head of the bay, its the light levels I am pretty sure.  Later in the fall, we catch them all day but right now, I have had too much success at first and last light while just grinding it out during the middle of the day.  Boats are fishing a lot deeper water and I know guys hitting them 50ft down.  I am going to either use my down rigger or a big diver during the day until I can hit them shallower.  We were using 12 oz of lead ahead of a flasher and I think we were getting down about 15 ft of water with about 50 to 60 feet of line out at first and last light.

Thanks Rudy. That give me some homework for the weekend. Go to Homer close to sunrise, and give it a try. Be following a small, low tide. I like testing theories. Not that one trip proves anything. But, data is data.

In homer tell sunday, yesterday 3 strikes got one probably 4 pounds 4:00 in the afternoon downrigger set at 80 ft.  This morning got on water at 7 trolled around with downrigger at 20 ft over 50 ft of water saw fish at 45 feet dropped down to 45 with downrigger and immediately had a fish on probably around 8 pounds off the water by 8. Pulling plug cuts it seemed yesterday the tighter you could get the roll the better off you were
