Slider with 1 bead infront and 3 behind for your drop weight, flasher, shock leader, dick's sure spin herring helmet and a "mooching rig " ( I believe it's called) 4,6,8 oz leads.......most importantly.... A fish that cooperates

In terms of rod and reel, what should I be using for salmon.  I have spinner reels of different sizes and rods of different lengths.

That's a matter of opinion I use a longer rod with good flex, and a bait caster style reel. I'll let the more experienced salmon guys answer that one. Spot ...calling Spot....?!

If you are running a mooching rig (36-48 inches) plus a flasher  and an 18-24 inch bumper (leader in front of your flasher that is longer than your lead dropper line so lead doesn't tangle around flasher) you are looking at about 4 to 6 feet of line you can not reel past your rod tip.  Therefore, you will need a longer rod and one that can handle bouncing 4-10 ounces of weight off the bottom while trolling or you will never get the fish in your net. Oh, you need a net that can fit a salmon in it, too. Personally, I like a 9.5 foot 1-6 0z rod. It has a lot of flex and that helps keep the tension on when fishing areas where you are required to use barbless hooks.

Google and youtube are your friends if you do not know what any of these things are or how to rig them.

Ding, Ding, Ding. And regardless of preference, these tend to be more available in a casting than a spinning rod, which is what you really want for trolling anyways.

Not that there aren't a few spinning rods like this, they are just less common and for trolling, why would you want one ?

Corey, if we do this, I can probably set you up with a spare of mine if you can't pull it together.

I went salmon fishing last week with a  guide. We were using baitcasters with counters on them.  My impression is the counter is a nice to have becuase you can always hit the bottom and reel up a little to get just off the bottom.

I see why a baitcaster is more ideal for lowering the line slowly so the flasher and weights don't get tangled compared to the spinner which really is designed for casting.

I have a 10 foot rod (Line Wt 20-40 lbs, Lure Wt. 3-8 oz.) for surf perch fishing.  I don't know if the handle being long is an issue or not.

Pinstripper, thanks for the offer to let me borrow your spare setup if our adventure works out.  It sounds like I need to invest in some gear but I don't want to rush into a purchase since I will need to do some research on what to buy.

What is it going to cost me to get a decent setup including the rod and baitcaster?  Something mid-range.

Do you guys use leashes on your fishing poles when kayak fishing?

Corey

1) Long handles are fine (within the bounds of good taste) as you tuck it under your arm while fighting the fish and get more leverage.

2) I don't have a single rod that I paid more than $100 for. My most expensive reels are the low profile Okuma CW line counters what I got on sale recently for around $100 (normally $130). You can absolutely have a kick-ass salmon setup for around $150 total and a perfectly cromulent setup for less than that.

3) Yes, but not the net. If a furbag grabs your fish while it's on the line, you can always cut the line. The danger is dropping it overboard. If a furbag grabs your fish in the net, you don't want to be leashed to the furbag and end up in the water. A pool noodle or other float on the net allows you to retrieve the net if you drop it.

Any advise is appreciated.

If you've never done this before, go simple:

Skip the flasher
Use a 6oz cannonball weight on a 10 inch piece of ~12lb leader as your weight.
For your lure, use a Bob Toman Thumper Spinner in Chartreuse or Red and White on a 5 foot long, 30lb leader.
Drop this to the bottom while you're moving forward and crank the reel up one turn.

Drag this around the Ghost Hole just faster than the water speed for an hour before and after peak high tide.

Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.  --Mark Twain

Corey, pay attention when this man speaks.

Mark, what is your view on trolling with or against the tide ? Also please consider going with us. I still owe you whiskey.
