Last week, when we attempted to fish at Pacific City, but aborted due to the weather, heading back over the bridge over the Nestucca River, we noticed several guys fishing from shore, I'm assuming for Salmon.  I also watched a few videos of old timers in the same spot throwing spinners and hooking several chinook from the bank.

Has anyone fished this area from a kayak?  I'm wondering if it would be a herring trolling area, bobber and egg area or both?  Probably a good Plan B, if Pacific City isn't being cooperative.

Any thoughts, tips or coaching is always appreciated.

I've been thinking about giving it a shot around there too I don't see why not just don't get in the bankies way I'd figure. Let me know if you want to go

I seen drift boats there today but not sure of the bait/technique.

We visit our friends' place on the spit fairly often but I have only paddled out to the mouth once and fished upstream a few miles once from a kayak. There are fish and places to fish away from the bank spots. There are also some shallow spots to avoid so I'd just go and learn the lay of the land. Don't overlook the little Nestucca. Here is one from the bank in 2014 from the spit.(spinner) My buddy just lost  a huge  fish last week from his boat out by the mouth with a herring.

Thanks for the tips. Any thoughts on where to launch in that area?  Is there a public boat ramp nearby?  From the satellite map, it appears there is a parking lot at the bridge and it looks like I could drag my kayak down there, but wouldn't want to upset the bank fishermen.

By the way, in the video I saw, they were all throwing the same color vibrax spinners.  I was happy to see that most of the fish were actually hooked in the mouth, and one that was snagged in the back was quickly released unharmed.  Tells me this is a good group of guys fishing in that spot.

Drive out towards Bob Straub park and there is a county ramp right there. There is also the "Guardrail Hole" with a ramp on the way into PC from 101 and another county ramp about 1/4 mile up the Little Nestucca off 101. There is a ramp at Woods and we also dragged our yaks down a short trail upstream from Woods where the road is close to the river. Look for a parking spot and big trees.

Thank you C_Run.  I will look those up.

I will be fishing Tidewater either there or on the Nehalem this week.  The rain should push some fish into the system.

I encourage you to get ahold of DJ at Nestucca Adventures. He usually has a bead on where the salmon are and for a small fee you can put in on his dock. He's also a Hobie dealer if you need something last minute.

If you set up a shuttle you can put in at the Cloverdale pvt ramp ($4) and float to one of the takeouts near the Woods bridge.  It's a nice float and no bankies to bother.

I fished there a couple years ago.  I launched at the county park South of the bridge. They have a boat launch there.  I talked to DJ and he recommended trolling upstream North of Nestucca adventures store to where the river bends. At the time he recommended kwik fish.  I didn't have any luck and only put about 2 hrs of trolling in.  I'd like to try it again someday.

The "Tucker" can be so much fun to float & fish, especially on windy days when the ocean is blown out. This river has something for everyone & all levels experienced kayaker can find good seasonal water to fish. Timing is everything here & the Bite can be spotty, but some beautiful fishing waters never lets you down.
If you want to read more about this area & it's fisheries I'd recommend checking out Jay Nicolas' books, a local resident fly fisherman & salmon conservationist.

The upper river is great for the less seasoned & you'll see more people there in drift boats, banking it, & even stand up paddle board fishermen looking for that lucky sleigh ride. The fly fishermen here are seasoned & mostly strip flies in holes as fish come in with the tide change.
Bobber fishing can be decent but the sculpin are a PITA.
The mouth of the Tucker is incredibly beautiful, a temptress that can also be very unforgiving. Tight quarters, many guide boats, rapid changing & compounding conditions, this area more suitable to the seasoned fishermen. One of my favorite memories here was on my birthday a few years ago. Truck loaded with dogs, stove, lunch, crab pots, & the wife, I deflated my tires threw it in 4WD & hopped the sand dune headed for the mouth. We dropped crab pots for quick limits, trolled for salmon, made lunch, & had a blast. Then we high tailed it outta there before the weather & tide blew us out!

If all else fails with poor conditions on the Nestucca & Ocean, I recommend some leisurely trout & steelhead fishing on Town Lake. Good luck, have fun & give a report!
