This guy tried to cross from Australia to New Zealand w/ an almost stock sea kayak. Pretty heavy stuff.

Sounds like he forgot to stuff his kayak with pool noodles.

Crossing the Tasman Sea is not something I would mess with in a sea kayak.

Now, THAT's living.
Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.  --Mark Twain

There was an article in the SEA KAYAKER mag about this guy, he came very close to making the crossing, apparently fell out and was unable to reenter his yak. Damn shame, leaving wife and little kid.

I watched that show on discovery chanel last week. Pretty crazy stuff.
There is an artical in Canor & Kayak mag. about  2 guyes who actually compleated the trip like a year later or something like that. It's in the May 08 edition.

I saw the Discovery show too.  They had some of his cam footage salvaged, it looked bad.  They think the pod  canopy/shelter he used prevented him from being able to right his kayak after capsizing. Rough stuff...

Man that is just spooky.  I didn't see the show but will look for it.  Thanks Z for posting it.

I saw the show too. The kayak made it, sans pool noodles. Okay, it wasn't exactly flying level, but it was still on the surface.

Now the guy paddlin, not so much.

That part at the end, when they played his VHF calls, I haven't had those kind of chills since "Blair Witch"

Definitely unfortunate for all involved. Wouldn't want it to be me. I second on the not wanting to try it.
