Interesting! Not a lot of shark bites in Oregon! I wonder what kind of shark they think it would be, I'm gonna keep an eye on the follow-up of this story.

Not a lot of shark bites in Oregon!

Not so true....  There've actually been several shark "attacks" on surfers in Northern Oregon.  I know of 3 in Seaside, 1 particularly horrific one in Cannon Beach, two at Ecola, one at Oswald West State Park, one at Glen Eden beach and another in Newport.  This is the time of year for the Great Whites to be nearshore in Oregon.

I'm curious about the follow up story too, that's what I was searching for when I decided to copy and paste this one.

The news keeps calling shark attacks in Oregon rare.  I suppose they are rare when compared with Florida but, with the exception of one Blue Shark attack at Cape Kiwanda, these have all been Great Whites.  Here's a graph of reported Oregon shark attacks since 1980.

I would imagine that the rarity of a shark attack is the last thing you're thinking about while being attacked by a shark  :D

I'm aware of the attacks in Cannon Beach,  I was more referring more to a comparison on a national scale, when compared to California and Florida Oregon comes no where near! when compared on a global scale,Australia kicks our ass, the Gold Coast is extremely prominent with sharks. Part of the reason for Australia passing a law allowing fisherman to shoot sharks on site. (Which in my opinion is extremely wrong and disturbing)

We also come nowhere near the same amount of people in the water.  So statistically, shark attacks might be more prevalent in Oregon than warmer climates if you look at it in a bites per swimmers/surfers actually in the water.

It would be interesting to see an "attacks per people hours" analysis.  And while we're at it, lets cull out attacks by anything under say.... 8ft.  :o

Let's add what aquatic activities per bite as well. I'm guessing surfing will score high on that one.

According to the data, nearly every shark attack in Oregon has been on a surfer.

Am I the only one that thought that graph looks like shark teeth?

Anyways, SamM and I had a great white's dorsal fin cut through the water between us in September 2014 at PC in 30- 40 feet of water.  We were totally safe since most attacks occur in 3 feet, right? Last September, same time of month, SamH, ndogg, and I were heading in to grab our crab pots when every f'n sea lion in the ocean started hauling ass at me (they were mostly jumping out of the water) and doing what I assumed was sea lion screaming. I never saw a sign of a shark, but I have never seen every sea lion in the ocean trying to quickly learn to fly all at one time either.   On both occasions we learned GW sharks were spotted in the area. The only common denominator I could find was SamH. In conclusion, don't fish the ocean with him in September. ;)
