What kind of fishing is good in the Portland area and the north Oregon coast around Thanksgiving?  I may visit family at Thanksgiving, and am wondering whether to bring my kayak and fishing gear.

You could always try monkey faced eel pole poking with family members.  Th preparation of poles is as much fun as taking a full wave on a jetty lol.

Salmon fishing may be a bit slow, but there will be plenty of hungry sturgeon in the Willamette.

It's a little early for steelhead and a little late for salmon but you can have a chance at either or both on some of the coastal rivers.  Heck, if you can shuttle or have a buddy car, the lower stretches of the Wilson River put out nice Chinook thru December.  Bobber and jig or eggs are the ticket.  Float down from the ramp on the Wilson River loop and get picked up at Garibaldi or the like.

Alternately, that's a great time of year for a day full of sturgeon on the Willamette.

Crabbing and rockfish all year in the bay, I have a boat you can use , when I say boat I'm referring to the big tuna aka aircraft carrier. I also have a trout pole and extra crab trap you can use.

Pete, personally this time of year is one of my favorites because there are fish to be found but the fishing pressure is low due to many variables including hunting season, weather, & the diversity of decent fisheries that are available up in the tributaries. I use this time of year to get family & friends out to kayak fish, experience an area from a new perspective, & maybe even get into their first salmon. Reading the weather pattern & river levels will help you  choose a time & location to have a safe & eventful day out. Id say bring your kayak, contact one of the guys out here for some intel, & enjoy what this great fall season has to offer. Cheers!
