Hey guys, I'm wanted to ask about Kayak fishing regs. My family has a place over on hood canal and I often head to point no point and fish from shore. I've thought about launching my yak and trolling just outside of where the shore fisherman are. What does one need to do this? Can you launch there?  Any yak permits or stickers needed?

Next item, I've been reading the regs about hood canal and from what I'm reading. You can only shore Fish. Any opinions on this? Am I reading this correctly?

Thanks.

Point no Point is not in the hood canal. Marine Area 12 (Hood Canal) is defined as the area in the Hood Canal south of the Hood Canal bridge.

What makes you say only shore fishing? Take a look at page 121 in the WDFW regulations. A lot of species are closed to fishing, but there is no stipulation about only fishing from shore.

Make sure you have your big boy pants on when you're in the Pt N Pt.  It can be very calm and go to very exciting very quickly.
If you've fished from shore you know what the rip can be like on the in or out and variability with direction of the wind. On an outgoing tide you can paddle to the tip and catch the drift out and away and it will carry you down a short mile out of the bar (brews:-) and then drift you back around to the point.  Just be away of the big ships that come through and can send a sneaker wave back into the current.  Keep your head on a swivel but it's manageable and it's not as bad as it sounds, just keep your eyes open.
Wind from the west make it a choppy put-in/landing at the launch but if you can get around to the east side on an incoming tide you can fish, you just don't get as good a nice back eddie drift back around.

Waves, rips and current change VERY quickly.  There's a great launch for kayaks with massive parking and a restroom.   Really pretty good flounder fishing just west of the tip, a lead jig of 2-3 ounces is plenty and there are salmon in that area from time to time.  Knowing the tide change is one key to safety for that area.

Also, be in the watch for seals.  They will follow a salmon right to and nearly on your boat.  There are known thieves in the area and other boats will holler if you have a salmon and they see them coming. Be watchful when you have a salmon in the net and get it in the boat ASAP.

If you've never had a shaker bit in half while you're trying to release it you've missed a great moment of salty fishing.  This was years ago, but I remember trying to hold the shaker while reaching in the boat to grab a needle-nose to release it.  I'd guess my hand was 18 inches above the nose when I felt a big jerk and that half the fish was left.  Might have been a 20 inch black mouth but I had a hard time tossing the "now sandwich" back to the thief and immediately showed it to the checker at the dock, who laughed and said it was likely a long skinny 30 inch-er and waved me off laughing.  I think the tone of the voice while describing the story was enough to confirm it was true... That would be exciting in a yak.

I do apologize. It's marine area 9 where our house is. We are in Drift Wood Keys HOA. I'll try and find where it read only shore Fishing. So in the regs it's with the stripped off area. Read #6. Pg114. I think it changed. Maybe it was in 2015.

Point no point- can I launch there and just fish like 100 -200yards off shore. Do I need any stickers for the yak? Any specific regs for kayaks in the sound? I'll be over there in the beginning of August. Anyone want to meet up?

Thanks for the info Trident13. I figured I could launch there. What about stickers or tags for the yak?

Right now don't need, stickers or tags in WA for a yak. Yet.
Do take a few hours and read the online wdfw regs. Complicated just starts to describe them.
As of July 12th, I am, officially,  retired.

Nothing to apologize for PA Greg! I apologize if my tone seemed rude or anything. The regulations are indeed complicated.

You only need stickers if you put a motor on the kayak.

MA9 regs change often so you'll need to check closer to your trip.  Lots of fishing options in that general vicinity beyond PNP.  Check you PMs for a bit of local intel.
