Through his stated professions this gentleman may demonstrate the skill level & physical abilities, but his impulsive reactions, hubris approach to the group, and basic inability to communicate like a professional are huge red flags for me.

Where are you getting this impression, Hugh? What I saw was a guy who attempted to stick up for himself after being called out as inexperienced when he didn't immediately display an array of experience badges in his initial post, both in this thread and his intro thread.  If you had that kind of resume and got called out as being clueless after asking about the safe way to approach a specific fishery, wouldn't you be a bit miffed?

Just to remind you, I am not part of any “dog pile,” and I am entitled to my own opinion. This guy demonstrates the inconsistent behavior of a loose cannon.

Quoted from Jimbob on his introduction http://www.northwestkayakanglers.com/index.php?topic=18970.0
“thank you for the suggestions ... not interested in a guide .. I am quite capable and Idaho is the wrong direction .... hoping to find folks that fish the coast and willing to just enjoy the company of others ... its proving hard to find a group willing to do that.”
“I may have made a assumption, never a good thing my apologies, I thought the fb page was that of a guide it said "book now "   I don't mean to make waves.”
Impulsive assumption, he admitted it himself. His stated intentions do not match his words & actions. Then again, another impulsive assumption & a lash out in my book…our group is unwilling. IMO, these remarks are unwarranted without any presence of an offense.
Jimbob again:
“Especially when a person is only trying to find some people to fish with .  ...there are so many ungrateful people in this world it amazes me everyday”
He is an adult that should be able to stick up for himself without lashing out right? I thought Crash nailed it on the head with this one: “Someone with your background should come equipped with thicker skin, no?”
No one likes a bully Jeff & I’m all for the bully-beater. But this communication is ridiculous & juvenile. So no., even when treated as clueless in person & on this site I’ve never felt the need to prove myself by self-declaring my experiences & background, much less insulting a group.

Okay back to fishing & sometimes catching!!

And these are some of the things I like about you, Hugh - your attention to detail and humility!  ;D

Look everyone, this is all on me.  It wasn't my intention to flame a newbie but rather to suggest that the area around Neah Bay is a tricky place for a newcomer and that asking someone to keep an eye on him in that location when he isn't yet known by anyone was asking a lot.

And yes, I used the word babysit.

If you read Jimbob45's introduction - which I'd read immediately before posting here - you'll see he just purchased a PA14, hadn't used it yet, and was raring to hit the mouth of the Columbia to go after halibut.

I don't think I was out of line in my initial post, based on what information was available to me. And I did wish him luck- and by that I meant "good luck with your fishing", not "good luck trying to find fishing partners".

crash responded to Jimbob45's outburst with simple "Hang in here, you're tougher than that" advice.

Matt gave a very reasoned explanation that it's hard to know how to respond to someone about whom we knew next to nothing.

I tried to explain what I meant by "babysitting" in my next post, because that word seemed to have struck a nerve.  And I took full responsibility for having offended Jimbob45.

I understand Lee's reaction and do not fault him.

I'm not going to suggest how anyone else should interpret Jimbob45's reaction.  It was what I said that he reacted-to, and I did what I felt appropriate by trying to temper the situation and explain what I was trying to say in my original post, but had, apparently, said badly.

I will, however, suggest that others' reactions were not to Jimbob45 as a newbie nor to his initial post in this thread, but to the attitude in his "I'm outta here" post, and to having tossed a muddy blanket on everyone when it was me and only me with whom he was angry.

Context is important.

I still, even now, don't see that what I said in my original post in this thread that was offensive, but I don't need to see the offense to accept responsibility for having offended someone, and I regret seeing Jimbob45 leave the forum before getting to know the members.

And that's as far as I'm going towards kissing his ass.

Thanks, Tinker!   :)

If anyone is offering to babysit during a halibut trip, I'll load my gear and grab my boppy on the way out the door! I'm pretty sure that most of us are deprived of good ocean conditions lately and really need some time on the water before someone gets their head ripped clean off! [emoji6]

Yikes guys. Let's try to be a bit more hospitable next time, eh? This guy was coming to us, asking questions, and trying to be safe. I'd hope we could encourage that.
Dozens of people join up and ask questions every year, how many get a negative welcome? 1 or 2 a year?

We're usually very welcoming.

And +1 to what Murse said

Did we implement a "beat-up-on-a-newb" quota to the site policy and I missed it? It's ok as long as we only piss off a couple people a year? Why not just be respectful of everyone?

I've re-read the original post a couple of times and I'm still trying to figure out what was said that deserved a dog pile. Anyone care to enlighten me?
Straw argument. Bringing up a quota is just a deflection, trying to make us feel bad.  It's bullshit and you know it.  This guy went from inviting himself, providing no credentials, to telling us he was the best thing since sliced bread.

We, as a group are respectful until someone acts like an ass.

Dang, Lee.  I think you need a nap.  :D  You have NEVER been a newb asking knowledgeable people how to safely join in on a fishery?

Wow, I've been away from the forum for a while, and thought I accidentally turned on Facebook.  This made for good entertainment, but unfortunately we might have lost a good member of the tribe, or not... We'll never know, but maybe we can reflect on this interaction for next time a newb chimes in. I can relate to both sides of this coin.
