My wife and I just took a short ride (in my new truck!) to Kayak Point to check out the water.  I was surprised to see how much open water there is at Kayak Point Park.  Now I'm wondering if anyone out there has ever fished this area...  what the prospects are, type of fish, when, etc...

funny you should bring this place up. it was mentioned in the current issue of STS as a great shallow water "rowboat fishery"..actually the article has another name but without the magazine here in front of me, i can't be certain what it was..supposed to be good for not only salmon, but also sea run cuts and steelies.

figure, if they can do it from a rowboat or 13ft low power smoker, we can do it too.

congratulations on teh new truck. out of curiosity, what'd you get?

Thanks for the info.  I don't know what magazine you're referring to (STS???) but I"ll feed it into my search engine...  My new toy is a 2008 Nissan Frontier CrewCab 4X4 NISMO.  It's my first brand new vehicle for myself since 1984 and I love it!  Waiting on my THULE Bed Rack system so I can load the kayak and check out Kayak Point after some fishing research...

oh, sorry, i use so many acronyms and abbreviations at work every day i forget that i sometimes speak shorthand.
That magazine is : Salmon Trout Steelhead magazine.. current issue has features on selecting a handheld gps and combining spinners and hoochies to improve your catch rate.

enjoy the truck. seems that model is hugely popular here in the south sound. see them a lot on the military post i work on.

Congrats on your new truck & Thule Rack Flyrodr  ;D  I have a 2006 Nissan Frontier CrewCab 4X4 with a Thule rack.  Is yours anything like this?  I had to modify the tracks on the side to install mine.  Works fine though and still love the truck.

That's the exact rack system I'm waiting on...  From the pic, it's something I'm going to enjoy for a long time!  I was also told that I would most likely have to either remove or modify the inside rail tie-down system but that's not a big deal.  Can't wait!

It's a very nice rack.  I simply removed the side tracks and reattached the shorter piece in the center.  Had to elongate the screw holes a little to fit, but this gives me the use of some of the side tracks, and makes room for the rack clamps.  I also put all the screws back in to seal the open holes.  I'm sure there are other ways to do it, but I wanted to be able to reinstall the whole track if necessary.  The front towers are prevented from going to the full down position, due to the wheel wells in my short bed.  I also use kayak saddles and haul my kayaks upright.  Not the best, but roof clearance is an issue when I tried to haul them upside down.

Post a pic when you get yours all rigged up.  Good luck and enjoy!

Completed installation yesterday and was anxious to get back to you about a couple of issues I encountered.  Wouldn't you know it though, your reply answered them all.  I was going to look into moving the forward racks back a bit until the vertical supports were able to clear the wheel wells but I may just try and live with leaving them in the full upright position; at least I can lock them in place without worry about getting them ripped off.  By the way, my truck is also SILVER so what you see is what I see!  Thanks for the info!

Glad to hear your install went well.  I just glued a dense foam pad on the wheel well where the front rack posts rest.  When I take longer trips without the kayaks, I lower the front bar to those rests to get the front rack out of the airstream.  They don't lock this way, but don't make as much noise either.  If someone wants to rip off your rack, they only have to take the bolts out anyway  :(  I didn't want to shorten the already short distance between the bars by moving the front ones back.
