Good Morning,

My wife and I have committed to finishing a trip started two years ago, so we take plane for Sacramento on 15Dec, rent a car and drive up the coast highway to Seattle arriving on 23Dec. I/we will be there for a week or so and my question to you good folks is, should I bring a fishing rod along and fish Oregon and Washington. If the answer is yes, then please suggest where to do it and what might I catch.

I am most interested in renting a Revolution or Adventure and fishing salt water in pretty close to Seattle.

Any help most appreciated. :)

Hey Andrew,

Welcome to the site. December in Seattle is real slow for fishing even though salmon season is open. There is hatchery Chinook fishing in Elliot bay but the weather and water temp can make for a miserable outing.
You can check the rules and regs at WDFG some hearty guys are out on the water but in December the wind can whip up some fairly big swells (buurrrr). No matter how you slice it the action is very slow.

Driving up the coast is quite beautiful from Nor cal through Oregon. I especially like the hospitality in Newport. They have a fleet of dory fisherman at some beaches along the Oregon coast but they are high and dry in December. Mostly high ::)
If you can spend a few days in Oregon there are some beautiful hikes out there. And not to put a damper on your fishing but if a storm blows in from the southwest the surf can be spectacular.
There is an awesome B&B in Garibaldi right in front of the smokestack that has everything going for it. Comfy beds, great hospitality, great breakfasts and an enclosed porch with a wood stove to curl up and look out over the water. I just wish I could remember the name of it (old timers disease).

Anyone else have any suggestions?

Have a wonderful adventure,

Kurt

Kurt,

Thanks for the local info, or, info on local conditions. Guess I'll leave the dry suit and poles at home and just enjoy the good food and great scenery. I had hoped to supply fresh cought salmon or something else big from the sea for the Christmas Eve dinner. Now, I'll have to find a fish monger. I bet there is a good market somewhere around Seattle. Foods been great everytime I have visited there.

In Oregon, you can probably find Steelhead in the tidaly influenced portions of most rivers in December.  If you're not dead set on yak fishing, all of the rivers in Oregon and Washington will be full of Steelhead.  Good Luck!!!
Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.  --Mark Twain
