Ad says "man hooks a marlin as wild as a raging bull from his kayak."

Airs 9:00pm Sat, 10am Sunday, and Monday at 9am.

I don't know if those times are east or west coast time.

I wanted to find out more about this show and managed to find a blog entry from the show's producer.

Next, I recreated a backbreaking battle on a kayak with a Marlin as wild as a raging bull. Fishing for record-sized marlin from his kayak, there was only two inches of plastic separating avid angler Jon Schwartz from the marlin’s thrashing bill. Jon could’ve lost a limb, his boat or his life. In an ocean full of whoppers, marlins are the ultimate swordsmen speed demon predator. And their greatest trick takes them from swimming machine to flying machine. Explore the secrets of these astounding aerial athletes.

There are two key aspects mentioned that sort of turn me off... the words "recreated" and the likelihood that even the original catch was a hook on a mothership and land on from a kayak type feat.

Easy now.  Jon is all right.  If I recall correctly, I was almost there on that trip.  I got a message from Jon early on a Friday morning.  He said the marlin were going off and if I could get my butt down there, he'd take care of the rest.  Well, I got the message a bit too late as there was no time to catch the flight of the day down to Cabo.  I was looking at doing a fly down on Friday, fish Saturday, fly home on Sunday deal.  Oh well.

The porta-potty reference was an inside joke I had with Z awhile back.   The name 'Bluewater Jon' just sounds like a name for a portable chemical toilet company to me, you know like 'Honey Bucket' and I can't get it out of my head.   It's unfortunate because he does mange to land a lot of nice fish from the kayak and I keeping thinking of a porta potty when I see his name.   I think I just have a bad case of jealousy.

So, just out of curiousity, what is considered to be the holy grail of megafauna attached to a kayak?

Bluefin Tuna?  Salmon sharks such as those taken by our very own?  Manta?  Carnie Wilson?  Being more of a paddler and less of a fisherman, I haven't really pondered the idea too much.

I might not have to keep this asshat on very long.

Bluewater Jon has manged to land most of the big pelagics people might consider the 'holy grail of kayak fishing'.. large tuna, marlin, sharks, etc..  Where he get's a lot of crap from some of his fellow kayak anglers is the fact that he does this via a support boat and doesn't actually ever do much paddling.  In fact, if you ever see his videos he has very little gear on the deck of his kayak suggesting that the kayak is little more than a floating fish fighting chair.  There have been many debates on various kayak fishing sites about mothershipping and strong arguments for and against it.  I can point you to a few if you're interested.

Are paddle/peddle hooked fish tracked seperately from mothership hooked fish, like fly caught record fish are tracked serperately from standard gear caught fish?

Yeah, that might be an interesting read.  I'd be grateful for a direction to a discussion or article.  Sort of akin to the ocean crossing or island circumnavigation scenes, I suppose.  Support boats are always a hot topic.
