So my buddy from Idaho will be here tonight, and we're heading down to brave the weather in Tillamook all weekend. I got the jetty and yakking for rf figured out, but we're hoping to find some red tails before and during the high slack. Any recommendations on beaches? or even some pile perch in the bay would be cool too. We're willing to drive about an hour either direction from barview . Any info is much aprreciated! He doesn't get a chance to get his rod salty very often......

I've seen folks fishing for surf perch off the beach right beside the jetty.  I personally don't know how good it is there.  Hopefully someone else will chime in.

Yeah Barview county park, the beaches just north of the jetty. Also run around to Oceanside. Or up to Rockaway. Pretty much any beach you can reach.

Fish the rising tide.

I've caught perch off every beach in Oregon I've been to with a rod.  It's sort of an hot or cold fishery.  If you find them, fish on, if not, keep walking.  They move a lot.  Perch fishing is best if you're mobile.  I walk a couple of miles usually.  Sometimes I catch more crabs and sculpin than perch, especially if I'm going slow and it has a chance to sit.  I've done a few tests with different baits but usually go with berkley gulp sandworms because they work and they're easy to get.  Color doesn't matter as far as I can tell, I usually use different colors on each hook and switch it up.  Sand crabs are good, too.  It's all about getting your bait where they are.  I actually prefer my steelhead rod for perch fishing over my surf rod because its so much more sensitive and you really don't need much weight.
Kayaking without wearing a PFD is like drunk driving.  You can get away with it for a while, but eventually someone dies.

I second what YippieKaiyak says!  I usually use my trout rod, Berkeley sandworms and 2 oz weight.  Don't need to throw it out far.

I've caught a few red tails off the beach that is just north of cape falcon. That is a good easy access place. You can drive down on the beach. Fish just out from the end of where the guard rail ends on the road. Kinda confusing directions, but you'd get it when you see it

I have fished the surf in Barview a few times (immediately north of the north jetty of Tillamook Bay). Typically landed 5-10 fish (mix of surf perch and a few small flounders). Most surf perch I caught there were relatively small though.

Thanks for all the replies!  We tried short beach, over by oceanside. Looked good on googlemaps, and in person. Fresh water flowing in, lots of muscle covered rocks, etc. But the surf was up, and we got hammered with rain and hail. Wasn't fun, and zero bites. Weather was off and on whole trip. We got lucky and grabbed the last cabin for Fri night, but none were available for sat night. So we fished Fri morning early from the jetty, caught a few. Launched and fished the south wall, did alright before the wind made it unfishable. And it was an eastwind. Even with the tide coming in, that slog back to the boat launch was brutal!  At this pt, we had about 50 fish between the 2 of us. Tried sp at short beach, then grabbed lunch. Took it easy till the evening low tide. Pretty decent weather and we caught another 60-70 fish from the jetty.. Got up early and hit the jetty for the morning low,did well and headed home, we had no desire to tent camp in that weather.  Headed back down first thing sun morning to hit low slack, and did well until it got crowded.  Then headed back to fillet fish. Took home two limits of bottom fish. I ended up with 71 blacks, 4 blues, 2 coppers, 2 kelp greenling, 1 ling.  Buddy had similar numbers. Just wish the wind would have cooperated, we would have tripled those numbers on Fri alone :(   he's coming back over end of july, hopefully better weather!

Had an interesting lesson at Ocean Park.  Did well with berkley gulp sandworms for perch.  Thought one was full of spawn or food and got an extra limit when i pushed on the belly.

On the humor side, sent a picture to my son and daughter (she has a one year old).  She thought it was gross, son thanked me for making him think of something he would have bet a lot wouldn't come up on a given day, fish vagina's.  Daughter (nurse) came back wondering who would stitch them up if there was a tear at birth?  Son quickly responded "Obviously it would be a Fishician."
