Thanks to bsteve I found you from ifish. I have been kayak fishing on an off (mostly off since moving here in 99) for over 15 years. Most of my experience is in the SoCal area. I have been out on the Willy, Tillamook Bay, Tualatin R., but that's about it. Never seen another kayak fisherman up here. Any way, glad to have found this site and hope to rekindle my fishing love and maybe make some friends along the way.
BTW, are there any safe spots to beach launch up here?
Todd

Welcome to the Cure!!!

"Safe" is a relative term and depends on the weather/swell.   ;)

Welcome to the NWKA forum.  These guys have gotten me in all kinds of trouble, taken my money, and lead me out into deep water.  Watch out for PolePole.  He thinks dumping on a surf landing "is the fun part."  So far it's been fun for me.  Hope you like it - Alan

I have an Aquaterra Prism, which is nice and stable, but low profile. Not the best for paddling through or over steep swells. Need to find a shore break or very small surf conditions.

I just started this kayak stuff this summer so it's all new to me.  Did get to do my first surf launch at the tournament NWKA held at Pacific City - Cape Kiwanda.  Definitely worth the trip.  Been back twice since but it's looking like surf and weather will make days on the water more rare.  Hopefully we'll catch some more flat water days - Alan

Welcome aboard!  That's a great Avatar!

It appears that you may already posess a little surf knowlege.  Put it to use and find the beaches that offer the most protection from whatever the current wind and swell directions are. (ie the lee of headlands) Look for the rips and breaks between sand bars.  Kayaks punch thru waves really well. (I've managed to make it out on a couple of 6-8 foot days with no problem).  Coming in will require a little strategy.  You can find info. on this site about beach launches and landings if you do a search.

Every once in a while you'll see some nut post an open invitation to fish some salty reef or point.
Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.  --Mark Twain

What?  I thought we were fishing FOR kayaks.  'Cause I roll deep on my 30' Bayliner.  Trolling for nutjobs in plastic boats.

Welcome to the forum, man.  There's lots of tasty information contained within, a lot of which pertains to launching points.

Sunset is in Coos Bay, actually past Charleston on Cape Arago HWY. Very Kayak friendly launch with good fishing and beautiful views. I have pulled lots'o cod out of there.....
