Have you ever whipped up a homemade lure, jig, bait for any particular species of fish, and have it actually work?   I don't mean copy what is commercially available, or historically used by the masses already, but something completely off the wall.

With the endless amount of choices of odds and ends hanging in the fishing isles at your favorite bait shop there has to be a lure to be made that hasn't been tried yet.

Show us what you've made.

My great grandfather took me fishing once when I was real young (5-6). His rule that day was only a weight, and hooks were to be brought, all bait was to be found from around the lake.

Found and used some caterpillars, butterfly's, couple grubs, couple frogs, ect.

We did really well, I think the key was using local bait...

Too bad you can't fish with live bait in Oregon...

Never ,made my own lures, but I've got several i plan on modifying- putting better hooks on, adjusting blades, ect...

We were targeting "bullhead" catfish in South Dakota...

If I'm not mistaken, the live bait restriction is limited to live fish. Frogs, caterpillars, butterfly's, grubs, sand shrimp, crawfish, worms, small children, etc.,  are all fair game. But what do I know? I'm in Florida! ;D

Change is good!

From the 2008 Sport Fishing Reg page 7

Gear and Bait Restrictions:
Use of Fish for Bait
1.It is unlawful to transport live fish between bodies of water.
2.Live fish may not be used or held for use as bait, except live nongame fish may be used in the ocean, bays and tidewaters when
taken from the waterbody in which they will be used.
3.Dead fish, preserved fish, or parts of fish, shellfish and fish eggs may be used as bait. Goldfish may not be used as bait or in angler’s
possession while angling.
4.It is unlawful to use lamprey as bait in any recreational fishery.

And so as not to completely hijack the thread, here's a link to WAAY more than you want to know about building lures that catch fisherman and give them something else to distract them from actually fishing.

couple years ago my cousin found an old trailer hitch pic and put an owner stinger hook he found through the pin hole and used that as a lingcod jig from the des moines pier and actually was getting hits with it, then hooked a big fish (could see the head shakes in the rod movement) and it broke him off... couldnt believe it...

Probably everybody & their bro uses this stuff. Cheap & effective. Can't seem to insert the pic using the file name like I did last time. I compressed it to 44 kbs. I'll try attaching it.
