All experienced folk!  This coming weekend looks good from what others have told me to look at.  Are there experience folk heading out of either DP or PC.  I would love to make a trip on the ocean if the conditions look like they seem to be.

I would also love to know if my read of the conditions are off the mark.  Here is what I am looking at.   https://magicseaweed.com/Cape-Kiwanda-Surf-Report/560/

Sat Sun seem to look conducive to a kayak trip.

Would love to get out with you experienced folk

Both days look money.  I'll likely be fishing Depoe on Saturday.  But depending on what it looks like as soon as I get out there, I may wander away from the reef first thing in the morning to do some deep-water Chinook prospecting.  I'll be back on it after I'm done with salmon prospecting to grab a ling or two.  Given that I'll be a nomad out there, I'm probably not the best person to tag along with.

I will be trying to talk my wife into letting me make a day trip for Saturday. I am heading home from Depoe Bay today, and I packed my kayak over for no good reason.

From Lebanon you are only 1 hour 40 min away.  Try for a half day.  I typically leave Portland around 4:30 to arrive at launch at 6:30 and can typically fish from 7-11:30.  and be back home by 2 when my daughter wakes for her nap.  I have had no problems getting a limit of fish in that time frame.

Hope you can make it! it is a great fishing experience when prepared.

Not having launched at Depot, where do y’all put in?  \

Also, what rod/reel combo do you use? Have a ton of line counter reels, not sure I have the right rod. Mine are all for salmon and pretty long.

Thanks in advance and hopefully will see folk on Saturday.

beer_run,others,  u have radio? and know protocol for depoe?(channel 80) not absolutely necessary but almost or is or should be. 99% use it to go out and in there. coasties monitor the slot and will for sure let u know ur ok to come in on the incoming ....or not, and will let u know that. going out not so much, but earlyish in the day most are going out right?
going south thru depoe bay light(only one in town) 1st left after, keep going left downhill ramp and parking right there. some like to go really light(15lb test, 10? maybe even lighter???) some go heavy. i use ?? at least 50lb braid maybe it`s 65? to a snap which goes to 3 -4 ft leaders(pretied) of 40lb mono. swimbait (i mostly use 4oz) and a shrimpfly on that and hold on! maybe best to go lighter til more comfortable as breaking off when snagged up could be a problem til u know how to break it off. couple times of that learn real quick as well as how not to break off when u u do get snagged.

Thanks dampainter. I have a radio and was picking up some gear today at Fish Field. I have some rock fish rigs, jigs and picked up some 4 and 6 oz jig heads and a variety of swim baits. Any other tips are always appreciated.

cool. how bout a safety flag? loud whistle?/(airhorn---they corrode pretty fast) in case radio malfunction to get u back thru the slot when incoming, pray hard if that happens to u too as it my worst nightmare to run in to somebody else(charter boat) in the slot, happened to me. lucky no charter or other. was a crap day with wind at the slot area. had someone been blowing even an airhorn to let me know they were in slot coming out i don`t think i would have heard it. i just blew whistle and went for it, i was so lucky!     weird... am feeling like a cop. if it helps keep someone safe and better prepped to go out there am all for that, i would have wanted any heads up if i had never launched at depoe. forecast, hope to gawd does not change looking good!  good luck!

I recommend a main line of 30 lb test or less if you're new on the ocean. I won't even go above 50lb test myself as it's damn near impossible to break from a kayak. If your reel is already spooled with something heavier, just add about 20 ft or more of mono as a topshot. This makes breaking off much easier when you inevitably get hung up while your getting the hang of how things move out there. This will make your day more enjoyable. Having your rigs tied up for quick changes makes things better too. The fewer knots you have to tie the better.

As dampainter mentioned, make sure you have the bases covered for safety gear. Fly a bright colored flag at least a couple feet above your head.

Beer Run-

I believe i have fished with you at Sellwood last few weeks.  A tip i am sure you have read but cannot stress enough is tip your bait with strips of bait.  It improved my catch ratio and tend to get larger lings.

don't risk getting in a bad situation or wasting precious ocean time trying to break off line that is too strong.
