I probably should take surfcasting stuff .

Very good idea. I believe there's some surf perch in there that make some really tasty eating. Love to do that when the surf is nuts. Try a MORF grub on a Carolina rig w/ a slow retrieve and you'll be set.

Looks like 10-14 ft swells for PC this weekend.

"Staying at the camping cabins at the RV park and a couple outrigger friends might join me over the weekend.  If nothing else, I'll at least catch a cold one at the brewery.  Any company is welcome!"

At least there is a very nice pool and spa at the Cape Kiwanda RV park. Also, good beer across the street.

"Here's the tentative game plan:  Any input would be greatly appreciated.  Depending on the weather, I'm thinking steamer, booties, neoprene gloves?  Light heavy tackle, 30# mono leader to mooching rig, 4/0, 5/0 Gamakatsu circle hooks? Herring? How hard is it to make bait out there? "

I used squid and herring on circle hooks during the tournament, and had pretty good luck for blacks and chinas. Also had an encounter with a whale!

ocpdlr,

Sounds like a blast.  I've only watched from the shore while the Dory's fish at Kiwanda and I always thought it looked like a great place to kayak fish for bottom dwellers.  I'd like to do that one of these days so let us know how it goes for you.

When I'm bottom fishing, I always bring a split tail, rootbeer colored plastic jig on a 6 oz. lead jig head.  Bounce it hard on the bottom and it drives the lingcod crazy.  It also works for rockfish. I've had luck in the mouth of Yaquina Bay and in the San Juans with this set up.  If that's slow, I switch to a white plastic fish.

Somewhere online there is a great article about fishing just outside Depoe Bay in a small boat.  Its full of great photos of jig options.  Can anyone find the link and post it again?

Good luck and be safe.

Dave,

Good luck and I hope you get good weather.  After your strong showing in the tournament I expect you'll do just fine if the conditions allow.  I'm tied up earning a living this weekend or I'd be there.  Good Luck and have a great time!

Rich,

If you are serious about the Huli Award then maybe we should start a new topic.  I like your idea of a fishing kayaker headed into shore with a big monster Tsunami on his butt, ready to eat him up.  You do realise this is quite a club you'r talking about....

LMAO :happy6: well if you hit the "search" tab up top, and type in "Huli Club" we already started that thread.. and i've already contacted our resident multimedia designer with one or two ideas....and forgot about the one version you just alluded to. thanx for reminding me

but, yeh, i dont see this as an exclusive club, but more as a "everyone's in it but doesnt admit" club.

i figure; it's a nice way to reward the member who provides the most spectacular " oh wow look at HIM [ HER]" moment in the surf  :D

Mahalos gang for the tips!  Greatly appreciated.

And thanks Dave, I just looked up the MSW surf forecast this afternoon also, holy guacamole! 12-14ft swell, 14-20 second period from the west Fri-Sun!? All my surfboards are back in the 808...  Will definitely have to play this by ear.

In your guys' experience isn't that bust conditions for yakfishing?
Maybe better for tow-in, eh?

Still, it'll be fun to watch.  Surfcasting gear and the setup Z mentioned is probably what will end up happening.  Maybe come back early and take the dog out and sniff for rooties.

Those conditions are best for watching the waves from a comfortable seat in the pub.  ;D

The ocean may be blown out, but the bays should have some opportunities.

...sent from "Stimulus Cafe", across the street from the Pelican Pub and Brew, steaming americano next to the keyboard....

Cape Kiwanda, spectacular display by Mother O'Shun.  The webcams do it no justice whatsoever...  Every once in a while, a sweeper set comes in which starts about a quarter of the way in from a rumline from Haystack rock to the far shoulder, clears out the whole bay.  Even the surfers stay huddled in their trucks...
