sure feels good getting some lingcod blood on my new Kokatat GoreTex suit (a 35th anniversary present from my wife, like I was going to say 'no').

I launched west out of Sunset Bay at sunrise and hooked this lingcod on a squid, he fought above his weight class, ended up being a good eating 25" ling.  As a bonus, he provided the bait (baby octopus) that I caught the rockfish on.

I ignored some scattered schools of smaller black rockfish near the reefs, the larger fish were either not biting or spread out.  I did let a couple undersize lings go and lost a couple other good sized fish.   cheers, roger

Great job.

I can't figure out which model Hobie you have?

Dave

I think he gives you a hint at the bottom of his post. ;)

I love the Oasis as a solo boat, compared to a Revo13 for example, it is slightly longer (14'6" to 13'5"), a bit wider (33" vs. 28.5"), little heavier (hulls are 93# vs 70.5#) and has much more weight capacity (550# vs. 350#) which means with the same loading, the Oasis will ride higher and handle nicely.   the kneeling position over the rear drive puts you dead center in the boat with all that deck space up front for crabbing gear, fish stringers, and/or a big dog.

I find the Oasis solo to be a bit faster than the PA12 that I had (and sold about a year after getting the Oasis).

I'm dying to get back on the the water.  Work and weather have been getting in the way...  A little jealous of you at the moment!  haha.

What is the retention size for Lings in your area?  We have to release Lings under 26"

Oregon minimum is 22", two per day.

The Oasis looks like a tandem version of the Outback.

Is the only difference between Oasis & Outfitter the front hatch?

Something like this might just get my wife out on the water with me.

Dave

yes, Oasis is 2' longer and has the front hatch.  The complaint I have heard about the Outfitter is that the front person gets soaked in all but smooth conditions.

I think you nailed it- the Oasis is like a 14' Outback.  or perhaps a wide 14' Revo.

Based on when my wife and I took the Oasis out as a tandem, it is just as fast as a solo boat.  Having two people on adds weight and drag and really just lets you take turns doing the pedaling.

Yes, the Oasis is quite comfortable to use as a single person kayak.  With 2 people...  I'm very much aware of the times when the person I'm with (typically my little guy) decides not to help out.

In my opinion the Outfitter is more like the Outback and the Oasis is more like the Revo. The reason I say that is because of the length-to-width ratios as well as the cockpits. In the Outfitter you have side trays similar to the Outback. In the Oasis the gunwale is more narrow and there is no tray area.

I am not suggesting an Oasis will perform like a Revo! I'm just pointing out the similarities and contrasts with the other boats mentioned. I will say that I constantly wish I had more space in the Oasis (when riding tandem) and can't imagine having a shorter tandem. The pedals take up so much room in the cockpit that there is very little place for fish and gear.

cheers.  As I was hoping, Friday was just a warm-up, today I took both my crab pots (baited with Friday's carcasses) and took home a 'Simpson Reef Hat Trick', including my best ling of the year (29", 8.5#).

I second that.  A shorter Tandem would be a maddening experience.

Nice Ling!
