I need some practice before Bsteves Sturgeon rally in December so I'll be out for a few hours this Friday morning, Nov. 28th if anyone wants to join me.

I'm planning to fish from 8 am to noon at George Rogers Park in Lake Oswego.  It's at Highway 43 and McVey.  There is an abandoned boat ramp near number 11 on this map http://www.ci.oswego.or.us/parksrec/GRPpreferredmap.pdf which takes you down to the river.  There are rarely other kayaks so I'll be easy to find in my bright yellow Hobie - except with the morning chill, I'll be wearing a little more than ocpdlr was wearing in Oahu - lucky dog.

See you on the water.

I'll work on getting the day off with my work boss and my domestic boss.

Can't make it this weekend as I'm working for a living, but my anchor system is about ready and I don't want to miss bsteves December sturgeon.  Good luck!

DC,

I have a day pass now for Friday.  Are you still thinking about sturgeon fishing?

It looks like the skiing isn't going to pan out this weekend. I may be able to get a pass for Friday as well. I picked up some 6/0 circle hooks. I've never used any bait beyond worms. Where should I get some on Friday morning?

Jay

Edit: Or it might be Sunday??? If the weather holds, the wife and I might paddle the Nestucca tidewaters up from Woods looking for chrome.

Now that's what I'm talkin' 'bout Jay and Brian.  Glad to have you join me.  I've also talked a future NWKA member into joining us.  He's done alot of kayak crabbing and I'm hoping to put him onto his first big (but not too big) dino.

I've had good results with sandshrimp and nightcrawlers together...and to be honest...that's all I ever tried.  I'm making a bait run tomorrow to Joe's and I'll pick up fresh bait for four of us.  Bring whatever back-up bait you want to try.

We're meeting at 7:30am Friday at the lower (furthest) parking lot in George Rogers park.  If you come a little later, no problem - we'll be fishing close to the park so you'll find us easily.  Remember to use the old boat ramp over by the bathrooms instead of the handicap ramp/stairs for an easy launch.

That should cover it.  Let me know if you have any problems mapping directions to the launch or anything else.

Last weekend I did well with squid, and it lasts through multiple fish.  Herring is also good, as is smelt.  Not sure I would use circle hooks, I have tried them and the hookup ratio went way down. Most sturgeon are not hooked deep and a regular 6/0-8/0 barbless octopus hook pops right out. With circle hooks you can't swing on those lite biters that are common this time of year when water temp drops.

Good luck.. Fished upriver near meldrum bar and had constant action with shakers and two keepers.  If you know where they are hanging you should do well..

I met Andrew "Deepcolor" and his friend Bryan late at 8 am this morning over in George Roger's Park in Lake Oswego.  For some reason I'm much better at showing up on time when fishing calls for a super early rise.  Attempting to leave the house at 7 am is particularly difficult.  With my gear all loaded I ran back inside one last time to say good-bye to my wife and suddenly she wants "just five minutes for a quick shower".  I don't know about everyone else, but "five minutes" is wife-speak is more like "twenty minutes".

The launch location at George Roger's park is nice, an old no-longer used boat ramp that is still perfect for kayaks with no power boats to wait for.  That stretch of the river is fairly narrow and there are some deep holes (135 ft +).   We managed a lot of bites on the sandshrimp and worm sturgeon cocktail but were only able to connect on a few.  (Thanks again Andrew for picking up the bait for everyone).

Here are a couple photos.  Deepcolor with a standard shaker and a couple shots of Bryan with an oh'so close sturgeon (~40 ") on his rather light rod.

Thanks for the good pics Brian.  I liked the mini-flotilla method of kayak fishing for several reasons:  1)  better pictures 2) someone to talk to other than myself or Kenny Chesney and 3) we can start spread out, and then converge where the bites are happening.  And I think we did the NWKA proud because other than from kayak, we did not see another fish caught all day.  A good day for sure.
