I needed to get my rods off the floor in the old kayak shed and I really didn't want to use precious wall space that I need for other stuff. I haven't had the issues that others have reported with horizontal rod storage, so I decided to use the space between two light fixtures.

I used some scrap plywood I had and bought 2 closet rods and some pipe insulation. I had just enough wood to cut a square base and the height I needed for all 4 brackets. I used a simple paddle bit to cut the circle for the rod to fit in. I didn't need the metal L-bracket for strength but it helped me get the T squared-up.

The light fixtures are 8 feet apart, but they have some width to them so I cut about 6 inches off of the closet rods. I used a little bit of epoxy to encourage the rod not to shift over time in the wood bracket.

The results are just what I was looking for, although I thought I'd be able to fit more rods up there. Probably I could if I alternated which end I put the reel on, but that seems like too much work. This gets 2/3 of my rods off the floor, and I'm working out a spot for the rest, so I'm happy with that.

This project was partially inspired by RevJCP's post on the same topic from a few years ago.

I just found studs,n beams,and used large cup hooks,with alternating the rods,to get a better fit.  That was at the old place. Still haven't gotten this place fixed up.

BTW, I can't see the link or reference to the Cabela's set up. < never mind, I found it. Damn single eye vision ... :-\. >
