I like the price and know I don't want side scan or anything but the gps and sonar... I welcome thoughts.  It's been a bit since I have looked at sonars/plotters...

I’m sorry I can’t speak directly to your questions, but I was going to mention that I recently bought a boat.  The boat came with a Lowrance
unit which is extremely close to this model, maybe even same.
I will look at it when I am back at home.   I have no use for it.  I would let it go for 1/2 the retail price.  Original packaging, etc.

The Hook2 4x and Hook2 5 are two of the only fishfinders currently on the market that I tell everyone to avoid. All Lowrance did with the Hook2 series is take the original hook series and make it cheaper. I had a lot of issues with the Hook2 4x at my shop last year to the point where I've stopped selling them. I got a Hook2 5 when they first came out, and I'm probably going to get rid of it soon and switch to Garmin. What's more is that Lowrance doesn't really support them. Their attitude is that if you buy a cheap unit and something goes wrong with it, it's because you bought a cheap unit, not because they made it bad.
Spend a little extra and get a Garmin Striker 4. Much nicer display, the transducer actually works like it's supposed to, etc.

I have one on my Oasis.  I only use that boat when I go out with my son so I didn't want a really expensive unit for it since I don't use that kayak a lot.  If I was using it as my main unit then it wouldn't be my first choice but its good for a back up.
