Some say it was a freak storm with with the morning starting out calm.  But ... there had been warning of an approaching storm since Thursday and on Saturday NOAA had a small craft advisory.  These guys shouldn't have been out there, and someone paid their life for them.  There are a lot of lessons to be learned here, but for now, lets take a moment of silence ...

That's a huge sacrifice to make for a bunch of strangers.  I've got nothing but respect for him.  Truely a sad outcome!

Hmmm, I think I'll take my VHF with me to the Islands.  I'll be doing some kayak fishing off Makaha while I'm there.

Did I miss something in the article?

I see mention of Kayakers being the target of the rescue attempt...  Not Kayak anglers...

The only angler I see mentioned is in the powerboat.

Sad indeed, but not as the post title implies...  Unless of course I am being blonde again and missed something.

Sad regardless...

Details are sketchy, but there is enough info on the Hawaii site to suggest they were kayak anglers.  But re-reading, maybe not.  I'll post more details as they become available.  Still a tragedy.

That's very sad and one of my greatest concerns; someone dying while trying to rescue me.
Time to open up that training/preparation thread again?

Confirmed ... they were indeed out kayak fishing.  The Hawaii kayak fishing community is taking this very hard as you can imagine.

just got done sending the following to our brethern at aquahunters. since i'm not a member, i used their 'contact us" link on their home page:
isaac,
please pass this on to all my brothers and sisters of the aquahunters

it was with a heavy and sad heart that i read the accounts this evening concerning the recent tragic loss of life in a rescue attempt this past weekend of several yakkers in distress just off the big island. it took big and brave hearts for that husband and wife to risk thier own lives so others might live.

my heart, prayers and wishes go out to all the families involved in this tragedy. may gods and goddesses sing their praises.
